Understand[edit]
The town of Fort Mill was established in 1873 with recorded history of a settlement existing back to the Catawba Indians. In the late 1880's, Fort Mill became a hub in the textile industry with the Springs Global Textile Company at the helm. In 2007, Springs Global moved their operations to Brazil, however industry in the region had diversified by then with companies such as Black and Decker, Comporium, Daimler Trucks North America, Muzak, One Main Financial, URS, and Wells Fargo as the town's largest local employers. The town champions its award winning school district, which is often considered the best in the state. Fort Mill is the closest suburb in South Carolina to Charlotte, thus it is currently feeling the effects of the urban sprawl of one of the South's fastest growing cities. For this reason, it is often considered a "bedroom community" of Charlotte.
