Biography[]

Forty is a confident, opinionated, and privileged, a charming, but over sensitive and unbalanced. He's working through a 12-step program, relying on his sister for support and attention, leading to him being especially vulnerable and sensitive to relapsing.

Early Life[]

Forty and Love

Forty and Love

Forty was born in 1991 to Dottie and Ray Quinn, the wealthy and well-connected founders of Anavrin. He grew up close to his twin sister, Love.

At around the age of 12, Forty was sexually abused by the much older au pair, Sofia, who had been hired by the Quinn family to take care of the twins while they continued to establish Anavrin. Forty did not recognize this relationship as abusive or inappropriate and considered her to be his first love. At one point, Sofia provided Forty with drugs and began to sexually assault him. Love, who was spying on the two, killed Sofia to protect Forty. However, she allowed him to believe that he had killed her which left Forty deeply disturbed. The Quinn family covered up the incident and made it appear to be a suicide.

Season 2[]

A Fresh Start[]

While Joe Goldberg (posing as Will Bettelheim) is sorting through books, Forty calls him over, not having introduced himself as his boss. Forty teases Joe for being confused with his questions and immediately notices that he is new. He tasks Calvin to catch Joe up on the schedule before leaving.

In a flashback, Forty scolds Calvin for bulk ordering Crime and Punishment. Forty insinuates to Calvin that he will be fired if the product doesn't sell.

Just the Tip[]

Forty is discussing display placements with Joe at Anavrin. He shares an idea with Joe, to play movies that were adapted from books at the store. He incorrectly suggests Pulp Fiction and Star Wars, neither of which are based on books. Forty orders Joe to set up the display and leaves.

What Are Friends For?[]

Forty praises Joe for his performance at Anavrin and informs him that he is a writer with several feature films in development. Taking a liking to Joe, Forty invites him to an improv show to see Henderson. At the improv show, Forty tells Joe that he is writing a role specifically for Henderson. Forty attempts to speak to Henderson after the show but is declined entry by Henderson's manager, Jonah, and Forty angrily leaves.

After witnessing an argument between Love and Joe, Forty asks Joe what his intentions are with his sister. Forty threatens to make life difficult at Anavrin if he hurts love. Joe tells Forty that he is working on himself, and Forty asks Joe if he is in recovery. He confides in Joe that he is in AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and tells him that Love is under great stress.

Forty plays tennis with Love and is frustrated with Love's lack of effort. Forty tells Love that he's been writing a new script with Joe, to Love's annoyance. Forty takes notice of her reaction and accuses her of being jealous, to which Love accuses him of leeching off of others. Forty retorts that Love is scared that he will become closer to Joe than she ever could, hurting her and driving her away.

Forty gains entrance to a Henderson party through Joe, planning to pitch False Promises to him. Forty runs into Henderson's agent, Tina, and is brutally turned away. A devastated Forty relapses, climbing onto a table with a knife and drunkenly summarizing his movie to partygoers. Forty is calmed down by Henderson, who promises to set up a meeting to talk about the film and the two make amends. Forty asks Joe if he knows what it's like to disappoint someone he perceives as being perfect. Joe replies that he does, and the two go to Joe's apartment.

Forty vomits into Joe's sink as Love comforts him. An emotional Forty asks Love is she thinks he's talented, and she replies that she does. Forty questions if his wealthy status disqualifies him from being an artist, which Love says that she will always support him and his writing. Forty falls asleep and overhears Joe and Love having sex. The next morning, Forty makes breakfast for the three.

At Anavrin, Forty is asked by Joe on what happened between the two. Forty tells Joe that he was on several different drugs and vomited everywhere in Henderson's secret toy room. When asked further about the room by Joe, Forty says that it is a creepy sex dungeon full of kids' stuff and sadistic items.

The Good, The Bad & The Hendy[]

Forty excitedly calls Love that he's going to pitch his project to a movie producer. He asks Love if she has seen Joe, as he needs her boyfriend's help, but she replies that he hasn't. He notices his hair and beard on an oven's reflection, and asks Love to help cut it. Love abruptly hangs up, to his confusion.

Forty interrupts a brunch between Love, her friends, and Joe. Forty sees through Love's lie that she was originally meant to meet with a wholesaler, but ran into her friends instead. He tells them that he had known of their relationship and was waiting to see when she would tell him. Love attempts to defuse the situation but he angrily slams his drink on the table, startling everyone. Love's friend, Lucy, tells Forty off. On the verge of tears, he walks away.

Forty is having his hair cut and beard trimmed at Joe's apartment by Love. Forty apologizes to Joe and tells him that they're going to be a great team together. Forty insists that only Love goes with him to suit shop, interrupting plans that Joe and Love had already made. While working on the screenplay later that night, Joe tells Forty that his script is genius. Forty is then convinced by Joe to take a flight to South By, a large film festival, the next morning.

Have a Good Wellkend, Joe![]

While out of town to pitch his script, he begins to date Amy Adam, who is actually Joe's ex-girlfriend and victim Candace Stone. Forty invites Candace to his parent's wellness weekend.

After returning to Los Angeles, Forty discusses Henderson's death with Love, which he believes to be homicide. He reassures a concerned Love that he has been attending his AA meetings. While at a getaway weekend organized by his parents Dottie and Ray Quinn, he introduces Candace to Joe. He tells his parents that Candace is an indie film producer, which causes Ray Quinn to leave, hurting Forty.

Later that day, Forty goes to his father to ask for money to fund his film. Ray insults Forty and his work ethic, which causes Forty to relapse again. Forty crashes Love's speech while their parents renew their vows and drops a heroin pipe while grabbing a cigarette. He is carried off by Love and is comforted by Dottie afterward. Love and Dottie have an argument and Forty witnesses Dottie slap Love.

After the weekend, Forty returns to AA and promises to apologize to everyone. Forty tells Joe and Love that he now plans to adapt The Dark Face of Love, written by Guinevere Beck. Forty learns that police believe that Henderson was murdered and is comforted by Love.

Farewell, My Bunny[]

Forty attends Henderson's funeral and impulsively asks Candace to move in with him. Love asks Forty to reconsider, which causes him to storm off.

At Anavrin, Forty begins production on The Dark Face of Love (abbreviated as D-FOL). Forty tells Joe that he plans to give him producer credits. Forty tells Joe the street that Candace lives on and invites him to a production meeting.

Forty learns of Joe's true identity and reassures Joe that he should stay at Anavrin, as he enjoys his presence.

Ex-istential Crisis[]

Forty tells Joe about Love's new boyfriend, Milo Warrington, who has been coming around Anavrin. He tells Joe about his disdain of Milo and tells Joe that Love is still not over him. Forty confronts Love about Milo, but is rebuffed by her. Forty tells Joe that he needs to begin dating someone else in order to make Love jealous.

While discussing D-FOL, Forty hires Ellie Alves as a production intern.

Forty confronts Milo about his relationship with Love. An enraged Milo punches Forty, who is then kicked out by Love. Love yells at Forty and Joe and Forty calls her a hypocrite, as she hired a private investigator on Candace. The three make amends.

Fear and Loathing in Beverly Hills[]

Forty excitedly tells Joe of acclaimed director Katheryn Bigelow's interest in the D-FOL adaptation. While working on the script, men in suits arrive and kidnap Joe and Forty. They arrive at a hotel and Forty reveals that the kidnapping was staged. Forty tells Joe that the men will shoot them if they try to leave and that all of their possessions have been confiscated. After telling Joe that they can only leave after completing the script, Ellie arrives to help with the script.

Several hours later, Ellie tells Forty that the script is still not done and suggests a full rewrite. Distraught, Forty jumps out of a window into a dumpster. Joe tracks Forty to a bar. Forty pays a newly-wedded couple to kiss the bride. Forty tells Joe that his seltzers were spiked with LSD.

Several hours later, back in the hotel room, Forty and Joe rework the script. The two play out the dialogue, which overcomes both of them with emotion. Forty is strangled by Joe before he lets go. Forty gives Joe the safe word to leave and tasks him with buying Moon Juice.

Forty is pressed by Joe of his own whereabouts, as Joe cannot remember. Forty tells Joe that he now believes that Beck's ex-boyfriend killed her, and that Dr. Nicky was framed. Forty confides that he truly loved Sofia and reaffirms his belief that he killed her in a jealous rage. Forty is comforted by Joe and the two embrace.

P.I. Joe[]

Forty excitedly greets Joe at his parent's house. Forty lies to Joe that he is unable to remember where they went after visiting Anavrin the previous night. Forty apologizes to Joe for meeting with Candace. Forty tells Joe that he dropped him off at his storage unit.

Forty is visited by Candace and he tells her that their hookup was a mistake. Forty angrily accuses Candace of being obsessed with Joe, and Candace tells him that Joe is Beck's killer before leaving. Curious, Forty visits the FreeDrNicky subreddit and begins researching Beck's murder.

Love, Actually[]

Forty is called by Ellie, who has been detained under suspicion of being involved with Henderson's murder, and requests his help. Forty tells her that he's on the East Coast and sends her his family lawyer. Forty visits Nicky in jail and tells him that he believes his claims of innocence. Nicky tells Forty that he is no longer interested in being free, having turned to Christianity. Forty shows Nicky a photo of Joe, and Nicky identifies him as a former client, warning Forty. Nicky refuses to say more, angering Forty. Afterward, Forty frantically texts Candace, unaware that she was killed by Love, that she was right about Joe.

Forty goes to Anavrin and closes early, firing Calvin. Forty is met by Love and begs her to leave, frustrated by her reluctance to believe him. Joe arrives and Forty threatens to use his family connections to send him to prison. Forty pulls a gun on Joe and Love reveals her pregnancy. Forty reprimands Love for getting pregnant, accuses her of being pregnant, and claims that she will be a terrible mother.

Forty prepares to execute Joe before being shot and killed by officer David Fincher.

Legacy[]

Due to the circumstances of Forty's death, the investigation into Henderson's death inevitably circled in on Forty as the most likely culprit. Thus, it came to standstill with the Quinn family paying off the police force to protect the family name. Love went on to use 'Forty' as the middle name for her firstborn son with Joe, going so far as to refer to their son by that name almost more commonly than his actual first name. Love also constantly sent messages to Forty's old number, talking about recent events in her life and so on.

Quotes[]

You gotta be careful, cause you're about to feel everything!" To Joe, after dosing him with acid.

"Love, I will do breath work with you later. I have to save you from a LITERAL FUCKING SERIAL KILLER first."

Although this actually fails to kill Forty, where he actually survives Joe's attack, only to get hit by a car and put Joe to ease.
    • In the books, Forty actually had a girlfriend named Monica, but since in the TV show had Candace dating Forty, Monica did not exist on the TV show.
  • Joe's nickname given by Forty is most likely a reference to The Great Gatsby, in which the titular character also refers to Nick as "Old Sport."
  • Forty and Love are named after tennis scores, in which forty is game point and love refers to being scoreless, symbolizing their parents inherit favoritism of Forty over Love.
  • Forty's Instagram username is "@thefortyquinn"
