Aaron Paterson starts with ... Hello I would like to know where in Australia I can buy an ACKEE fruit tree which Jamaican people make food from the fruit. Is there a Nursery in Australia who sells ACKEE FRUIT TREES, also PLANTAIN TREE & BREADFRUIT TREES. Is there a place where I can buy fresh fruit from these trees/plants? I live in Rockhampton, Central Queensland. Thanks for any help given. You may be able to import seeds (make sure you use the botanical name) but this is going to take time and money - but if you look at the previous post (which I tried to attatch above) there are some people in QLD with the tree - they may be able to provide seeds / suckers / information as to sources. There are also people that sell Jamaican cusine. BJ says... Bluggoe bananas are Plantain. You can buy them from Banana nurseries. You'll have to get a DPI permit to grow one in Rocky though. Supposed to be easy to get though. The Backyard Blue Banana website has a bit of info on there. DC says... For anyone in the Brisbane/NNSW area: I am considering doing a bulk order of ackee seedlings to make the transport cost (via greyhound bus) from Cairns more reasonable. I would ship to Brisbane to avoid the mandatory DPI spray (and associated costs) they have to do if sending out of Qld. If anyone is interested in getting a seedling let me know - I only want 2 myself so hope to find other interested people to get the numbers up and share the costs. Okay - not an overwhelming response (!) but if anyone in the Brisbane and surrounding areas is interested, we can get up to 12 delivered for $17 each plus a total of $85 postage (flat rate) from Cairns to Brisbane, regardless of quantity ordered. DC says... Hi Phil, Not sure how advanced they are, but the nursery says "140mm pot size plants" - I'm guessing about as advanced as your average $10 seedling. As to whether they'll do well in the area...I do have some doubts - they obviously won't like frost - but I'm so bloody keen to grow some that I'm game to give it a go. Position (and lots of love) will be the key of course, plus I'm playing with the idea of making a greenhouse-type-structure as Ackee isn't the only full tropical fruit I'd like to grow. We get the odd light frost but I have mostly canopy here so if I can get it to a decent height it might do ok. It has taken a hammering from the early summer we have here in early spring - hot westerly sun and strong dry winds - but is bouncing back now we've had a little rain. JohnMc1 says... Sorry to be off topic OP, but lastly, Jujube's are one tough drought resistant tree that needs very little attention and still produces copious amounts of delicious fruit. One early mistake I made was to feed them like other fruit trees and lost a few as a consequence. All mine are still in gro-bags, hasn't affected growth or performance that I know of. John, I made the mistake of putting mine in-ground. they both had large swollen nodes about 3 inches below the soil line and constantly sent out vigorous suckers from that point. I dug them up and potted them up but they just declined and the grafts died in the end.
