Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Erie County Democratic headquarters was full of life Saturday afternoon as Democrats endorsed Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz for reelection and officially kicked-off his campaign.
"Eight years ago you gave me, the son of a steelworker and nurse from Lackawanna, the honor to be the Democratic party's candidate for county executive", Poloncarz told the crowd gathered. "You put your trust in me to lead a community forward after twelve years of Republican and after more than four decades of Conservative party rule. No one gave us much of a chance back then", declared Poloncarz.
"Today I am pleased to announce I am seeking re-election to the office", Poloncarz told an elated crowd.
While Poloncarz doesn't yet know who his opponent is, he says, "I don't know who my opponent will be, but I know what my opponent will represent. You see, the modern Republican and Conservative parties do not represent the working men and women of America".
Before Poloncarz took the stage after the unanimous endorsement by Democrats, Rep. Brian Higgins and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown helped introduce the County Executive.
Poloncarz served as Erie County Comptroller for six years prior to winning election as County Executive in 2011. He was re-elected in 2015.
