What is an RF Front End Module?

A Front end module is one of the most important parts of an RF System, it is placed between the antenna and the digital baseband section of a wireless system. Front end modules are available in various configurations based on the application. They can consist of Power amplifiers, low noise amplifiers, switches, Filters, Power detectors, baluns and other products – the configuration varies based on the application and requirement. The configuration of the FEM can vary – Some contain only Tx components, others only Rx components and some contain both Tx and Rx components.

The configuration of a front-end module varies depending upon the application and requirement. They are used in a wide variety of RF products and applications including wireless systems, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cell phones, FM radio systems, television receivers, navigation systems etc.

Important parameters when looking for a Front-End Module:

  • Configuration: Front-end modules have several RF components like switches, amplifiers, filters etc. which serve different purposes to make the functioning of the module more efficient and increase its RF performance.
  • Operating Frequency: Front-End modules use radio waves in a wide range of frequencies. Operation at higher frequencies offers higher bandwidths but also face higher attenuation.
  • Protocols Used: A Front-End module may use one or several wireless connectivity protocols. The protocols used by the Front-End module may set the range, data transfer rate, energy consumption and other features.
  • Power Consumption: As front-end modules have several additional components/circuitries integrated into them, they require more power than other RF modules.
