Listen up, children, for some facts about hummingbirds.

Hummingbirds cannot walk or hop, though they can use their feet to scoot sideways while perched. These birds have evolved smaller feet to be lighter for more efficient flying. They will use their feet for itching and preening, however.

Hummingbirds have 1,000 to 1,500 feathers, the fewest number of feathers of any bird species in the world. Not only do they not need as many feathers because of their tiny size, but having fewer feathers also keeps them more lightweight for easier flight.

The average ruby-throated hummingbird weighs 3 grams. In comparison, a nickel weighs 4.5 grams. It would take more than 150 ruby-throated hummingbirds to weigh 1 pound.

Roughly 25% to 30% of a hummingbird’s weight is in its pectoral muscles.

A hummingbird’s maximum forward flight speed is 30 mph. These birds can reach up to 60 mph in a dive.

Hummingbirds lay the smallest eggs of all birds. Their eggs measure less than 1/2 inch long but may represent as much as 10 percent of the mother’s weight at the time the eggs are laid.

A hummingbird must consume approximately half of its weight in sugar daily, and the average hummingbird feeds five to eight times an hour. In addition to nectar, these birds also eat many small insects and spiders and may also sip tree sap or juice from broken fruits.

A hummingbird’s wings beat between 50 and 200 flaps per second depending on the direction of flight, the purpose of their flight and the surrounding air conditions.

An average hummingbird’s heart rate is more than 1,200 beats per minute.

At rest, a hummingbird takes an average of 250 breaths per minute.

The rufous hummingbird has the longest migration of any hummingbird species. These hummers fly more than 3,000 miles from their nesting grounds in Alaska and Canada to their winter habitat in Mexico.

The ruby-throated hummingbird flies 500 miles nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico during both its spring and fall migrations.

Depending on the species, the average lifespan of a wild hummingbird is three to 12 years.

Hummingbirds do not suck nectar through their long bills, they lick it with fringed, forked tongues. Capillary action along the fringe of their tongue helps draw nectar up into their throats so they can swallow.

A hummingbird can lick 10 to 15 times per second while feeding.

Many hummingbird species, including Anna’s, black-chinned, Allen’s, Costa’s, rufous, calliope and broad-tailed hummingbirds, can breed together to create hybrid species.

Hummingbirds are native species of the New World and are not found outside of the Western Hemisphere except in a few zoos or aviaries. There are no hummingbirds found in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia or Antarctica.

Field Notes: Hummingbird numbers have diminished seemly as their migration has started and almost any day now they will have all migrated.

Some people believe that stopping supplemental feeding of hummingbirds will hasten them on their way sooner. Other people believe that supplemental feeding should continue until they are all gone and that it won’t slow their departure. (I am of the latter persuasion.) If you choose to continue feeding, remember to bring your feeders inside on cold nights.

Unusual and/or sought-after species or high counts of common ones reported by various observers during the past week: one Hammond’s flycatcher, two dusky flycatchers (South Park Wildlife Habitat Management Area); one pied-billed grebe (Flat Creek platform); two pied-billed grebes, three American white pelicans, two California gulls (Oxbow Bend); and one Steller’s jay, one Clark’s nutcracker, five golden-crowned kinglets, five ruby-crowned kinglets and one orange-crowned warbler (Jenny Lake Loop Trail).

We hope to get verification from a local birder who showed Bernie McHugh excellent pictures and video he’d taken on Thursday of a grasshopper sparrow at Kelly Warm Springs. Although this species breeds in eastern and extreme southwestern Wyoming, it’s a rare bird for Jackson Hole and very rare statewide after Sept. 1. Please report to Nature Mapping (and me) if you’ve seen it.

Bernie McHugh reported Sept. 11 at the feeders in Wilson one female broad-tailed hummingbird. On Friday at Kelly Warm Springs, feeding in the shrubs on the west end, he spotted two yellow warblers; one common yellowthroat; one yellow-headed blackbird; four juvenile red-winged blackbirds; one Brewer’s sparrow; two vesper sparrows; one green-tailed towhee; and 23 white-crowned sparrows (three adults, 20 juveniles).

Also on Friday, south of Colter Bay feeding in Lodgepole pine, he reported one yellow-rumped warbler and two Canada jays (formerly known as gray jay; the name changed in 2018).

At least seven cedar waxwings have been found dead at one location in East Jackson. Have you seen any sign at more locations?
