About 100 lightning bolts strike the Earth’s surface every second That’s about 8 million per day and 3 billion each year.

Does lightning ever strike the same place twice?

Yes! It is estimated that the Empire State Building gets hit by lightning between 25 to 100 times annually. The Empire State building is the tallest building in NYC at 1250 ft high. A lighting rod at the top absorbs and diverts much of that energy to keep people and structures safe.
