A private funeral for crocodile hunter Steve Irwin was held on Saturday and there were plans for his body to be buried at the family-owned Australia Zoo, it was reported yesterday.

Irwin, killed by a stingray on the Great Barrier Reef last Monday, was given a private service at a funeral home in Caloundra, the Brisbane-based Sunday Mail said. It said the local council had given permission to bury Irwin, 44, at the zoo that has been owned by the family since 1970.

The prime minister, John Howard, offered a state funeral, but Irwin's father, Bob, said his son would have preferred a private one.
