Can we agree that the best part of going to a fair, amusement park, or carnival is the food?

Forget the rides and games!

I’m all about the treats.

And one of my favorite is definitely funnel cake.

There’s nothing better than fresh, warm fried dough sprinkled with powdered sugar.

What are funny cake fries made of?

There’s nary a potato in sight in the recipe so don’t let the name fool you!

Funnel cake fries are made from fried batter, just like funnel cake itself.

They are called fries because the batter is in french fry style strips.

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Salt– To balance the flavors
  • Milk– Any kind you have

  • Vanilla– Real vanilla extract is better than imitation

To make these funnel cake fries, start by heating 2 inches of oil to 350 in large heavy bottom pan.

While the oil heats, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.

When the dry ingredients are fully combined, whisk in the milk, eggs, and vanilla until the mixture is smooth and the consistency of thick pancake batter.

Is funnel cake made from pancake batter?

There are some recipes out there that use pancake batter in funnel cake.

These fries have a thicker batter than pancake batter, but it is very similar.

I’ve found that the thicker batter is needed for them to hold up to deep frying and retaining their desired shape. Nobody wants a soggy funnel cake fry!

Storing Leftovers

These are best warm from the pan, but if you have leftovers you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for 4 days.

Reheat them in a warm oven until warmed through.

Tips and Tricks

  • The batter will be similar to a thick pancake batter when you are ready to fry it.
  • Make sure you rotate the fries while they cook since they start to float.
  • Don’t skip draining them. They will be a bit soggy if you don’t drain the excess oil off.
