Possibly from girdle-string, attested from the 19th century, but uncertain. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

  1. A scanty covering for the genitalia, with a thin strip of fabric that passes between the buttocks. Coordinate term: C-string
  2. A type of loincloth or breechcloth.
