Synopsis
DELTARUNE's world is a different one. With different characters, that have lived different lives.A whole new story will happen...
Toby Fox
Chapter 1
Chapter 1, titled The Beginning, starts with the player creating a vessel that is abruptly discarded. Instead, they inhabit a vessel who they cannot choose: Kris. They are a quiet human teenager who lives with their mother Toriel and goes to the local school in Hometown. After being assigned a tall reptilian student, Susie, as a partner for a school project, she threatens to eat their face. They are forced to team up and go to get chalk from the school supply closet.
Upon opening it, the duo inadvertently discover the Dark World inside. There, they meet Ralsei, a kind hearted Boss Monster-like Dark Prince, who reveals that the three of them are the heroes of the Prophecy, destined to restore balance to light and dark. During their adventure, they meet Lancer, a goofy bad guy determined to stop them from reaching his kingdom's Dark Fountain. Feeling undervalued, Susie leaves Kris and Ralsei for a time and teams up with Lancer. Susie's friendship with Lancer helps her become more compassionate. The whole cast ends up uniting into a single team of four. In the end, Lancer helps the trio overthrow his cruel father, King. Afterward, Kris and Susie say their goodbyes to the Dark World, and, using the power of Kris's human SOUL, they seal the Eastern Fountain.
Kris and Susie return to their world together, appearing in a room filled with toys and board games, representing the Dark World and the characters they met. Kris and Susie agree to return to the Dark World the next day. Kris can leave the school and explore Hometown.
Kris goes to sleep after exploring the town. In the middle of the night, Kris shambles out of bed, seemingly fighting just to walk. They rip out their SOUL and throw it into a birdcage, where it becomes trapped. A knife materializes in Kris's hand, and they look at the camera with a menacing smile as their eye glows red. The screen then goes completely black for a few moments before the credits play.
Chapter 2
The second chapter, titled A Cyber's World, begins with Toriel calling out to Kris. She then discovers a knife and acts shocked. However, it is almost immediately revealed that this is because Kris ate all of the pie she had baked the day before.
Kris wakes up, goes to school and enters the Dark World again with Susie. They meet Ralsei and explore the Castle Town, which has been significantly expanded by the addition of NPCs from Chapter 1. Eventually, Susie mentions they have homework to do, prompting Ralsei to banish them from the Dark World until their homework is done.
They go to the Library, where they find another Dark World, the Cyber World, awaiting them, and jump into it, this time after Noelle and Berdly, two of their classmates. They hear talk about a Queen, who acts as the main antagonist for this chapter, and meet her soon after. She captures Noelle, while Berdly switches to her side voluntarily. Eventually, Kris splits up with the other party members and teams up with Noelle. In Kris's company, Noelle learns to be less fearful, accentuating one of the game's themes of personal development. Later, after the entire party gets thrown into Queen's dungeon, Berdly learns to be less arrogant after failing to solve multiple puzzles, although he takes the lesson a bit too far. After fighting Queen in her normal form, the final boss fight begins with both parties fighting inside mechas, and then combat proceeds in the style of a Punch-Out!!-esque fighting game. Kris seals the Dark Fountain of this world, and the Lightners all return to the Light World.
After walking through town, Kris goes home and Toriel invites Susie to spend the night at her house. She sends the pair to wash their hands. When Kris goes to the bathroom, they rip out their SOUL again and escape through the window, leaving the player to listen to a chat between Toriel and Susie. Eventually, Kris returns to the bathroom and puts their SOUL back in their body.
After Susie and Kris fall asleep while watching TV, Toriel calls the police to inform them that she saw something outside the house and found her car tires slashed. After that, Toriel also falls asleep in the living room. Later, in the middle of the night, Kris wakes up, and, with their knife, creates a Dark Fountain that envelops the entire room in black mist. The last thing that can be seen is the static television screen and a ghoulish smile on it. Then, the screen goes completely black for a few moments before the credits play.
Chapter 3
The Third Chapter, titled Late Night begins with Susie and Kris waking up in the Dark World that Kris created. In the Dark World, they encounter Ralsei, who came to this Dark World from the Castle Town Dark World to help seal the Dark Fountain. As they go along, they hold a conversation about Ralsei going to the festival with them, but Ralsei must unfortunately inform Susie that he isn't real due to the way Darkners, and by extension, Dark Worlds, blur the line between fantasy and reality. From here, Susie questions how Ralsei can't be real when she can hear him and see him. Before they can get much deeper into it, they are interrupted by Tenna, who welcomes them to TV World. He invites them to join him on a fun game show.
Thrown into the first board, the trio participate in a virtual game called TV Time: The Legend of Tenna where they end up in a desert and have to find three keys and the Mooncloud Stone. Along the way, they find the Power Croissant that allows Susie to pull up weeds and throw things. Facing Elnina & Lanino, they battle them for the Mooncloud Stone, but before the Fun Gang can complete the challenge, an argument between Elnina and Lanino causes the couple to split. Due to the technical difficulty of accidentally destroying a marriage, Tenna finishes the challenge for them. With the stone in hand, they continue on, solving puzzles and solving quizzes until they have all the keys. Heading to the pyramid, they enter it for their first Physical Challenge.
For their first Physical Challenge, they must cook and serve as many customers as possible before time or popularity runs out. After completing the Physical Challenge, Tenna, not wanting the fun to end, informs the Fun Gang that there will be a second round, and shows the Fun Gang the Green Room. After a bit of exploring, they seek Tenna to begin the next round.
When the Second Board comes up, they start by playing the TV Time: Legend of Tenna again, this time on Kodakoda Island where the purpose is to take as many pictures as they can, looking for two lovers to open up the Rainbow Bridge to Atlantis. Upon finding Lanino/Elnina (Whoever the offender was in the previous Board) they take them to Lovers Cove where its discovered that the Offended Spouse has already begrudgingly replaced their significant other with Rouxls Kard. Despite being in a relationship with the one, Rouxls invites the other to join, and despite the awkwardness of the situation, the rainbow bridge opens and the Fun Gang proceed to their third physical challenge, a rhythm band game, playing a song called Raise Up Your Bat.
And with this, the second round ends. But Tenna's neediness causes Susie and the others to agree to a third round just for him. However, before it can start, Susie realizes after overhearing Tenna that he's hiding something from them, and refuses to do another round until they figure it out. Investigating a door that had been barred by one of Tenna's henchmen, they discover Toriel outside of the studio in the frozen wasteland. Before they can rescue her though, they are discovered by Tenna who forces them into a final board against their will. The charm of the games has died out and begins to show how desperate Tenna is, how much he craves attention, and how he is afraid of "The family fighting again". After a few battles, the Fun Gang manage to get away and explore the wider TV World, and even encountering a fun Cowboy Game in the process. As they wander through TV World, they cause mayhem, initiating a mass walkout by Tenna's employees, that leaves his studio abandoned, and cause Lanino and Elnina to split from Rouxls and return to their own previous relationship. Eventually, getting back to the TV Time Studio, they find it empty and cold, much of the remaining Darkners of TV World slowly turning to stone due to their actions. Entering in, they head back toward where they found Toriel before, only to encounter Tenna again, who eventually explains why he wants to play games so badly, referencing Kris' homelife, the subtle quarrel with the Dreemurrs and the Holidays, as well as the break-up of Asgore and Toriel. He says he used to be watched all the time and is now abandoned. He says that the Roaring Knight appeared, and told him that if he followed their orders, he would never be unwatched again. When he then tries to force them into a new round, Susie refuses, causing Tenna to initiate a battle with the Fun Gang. But after a short battle, he is defeated, and proceeds to admit that he just doesn't want to be thrown away. Ralsei tries to get him to accept it for peace of mind that he, like all Darkners, will become obsolete. But Susie pushes past Ralsei and informs Tenna that it doesn't have to be that way. She tells him that she also knows what it's like to be thrown away, and explains how she found Kris and Ralsei, and found a place to belong, and that he will to.
Due to feeling as though he has a future, he decides to give the Fun Gang what they want and presents them Toriel. However, after doing so, the Roaring Knight appears and severs Tenna's arms. The Fun Gang enter battle with the Knight only for the end to be a total party defeat, each of them one-shot by the Knight's amazing power. Attempting to take Toriel, Susie attempts to stop the Knight, but doesn't have the strength. But before the Knight can take Toriel, Undyne appears to stop the Knight, only to be captured as well. Kris and Susie give chase to the Knight, and race out of TV World out into the Light World again. Giving chase to a mysterious figure, they're led to the Shelter, where they are locked out. They discover a hidden electronic panel, which possesses three entry fields and three symbols beside of them. One of a Pine Tree, one of a Police Badge, and one of the Delta Rune. Susie, having no other idea, decides that the only productive thing they can do is close the TV World Dark Fountain and leaves. Before Kris can follow though, the Shelter's door slowly opens for them...
Chapter 4
Weird Route
If the player forces Noelle to freeze enemies with ice magic, an alternate story route occurs. The player emotionally manipulates Noelle to freeze enemies and solve puzzles by herself and makes a deal with Spamton to acquire a ring that improves her magic. She is eventually forced to freeze Berdly solid with the SnowGrave spell after he confronts the duo. She then leaves Kris, shaken by her own actions, and is too exhausted to participate in Queen's plans. Ralsei informs the latter of the Roaring preemptively, avoiding her battle. Kris goes to seal the Fountain alone but is stopped by Spamton, who upgraded himself into Spamton NEO while Queen was looking for Berdly. Fighting Spamton, Kris calls for help from Susie and Ralsei, who do not respond. The player then calls for help from Noelle, who freezes Spamton. Kris seals the fountain. In the Light World, Berdly is found unresponsive, and Noelle may question whether the Dark World really was a dream if visited at the Hospital. The route ends the same way as the normal route, with Kris opening a Dark Fountain.
During the events of the TV World Darkworld, there appears to be no difference to the chapter (save for one) as the chapter seems to already act as though you're on it, even if you're not. In the Chapter 3 Weird Route, when asked who you'll go with to the festival, the Player may choose "Noelle", and Ralsei will respond that he thinks taking her would be a "bad choice".
Chapter 4 however continues the Weird Route through various scenes. At the church, Kris can speak with various characters, including Noelle who seems to desire to have a private conversation with Kris later. After explaining everything they learned about the shelter to Susie, Kris and Susie are interrupted by Noelle who seems interested in having Kris and Susie over for a study session. When Susie wishes to celebrate their lucky break with a high-five, Kris leaves them hanging due to being too interested in Noelle, to which Susie mentions how much things seem to have taken a "weird route" for Noelle to ask them like that. After church, Kris and Susie can optionally choose to visit Berdly in the hospital, to which only Kris wishes to go into his room. When in there, Kris finds an unconscious Berdly which they can choose to either leave alone, or warm up by interacting with the space heater and changing his hot water bottle. Doing so shows that Berdly relaxes, and insinuates he might be feeling a little better. When exiting the room, Susie asks Kris to be sure he didn't give them the "Bird Flu". After getting to the Holiday Household, everything Proceeds as usual until Kris sets off to investigate December's guitar. At that time, Noelle corners Kris in the upstairs, causing Kris, who had just previously pulled their SOUL out to hide it in the nearest drawer as Noelle says they want to speak with them privately in her room. After Noelle is gone, Kris hurries down stairs to shove the heart in a giftbox until the conversation is over. However, the SOUL escapes by venting out of the room. Traveling through the house's air vents, the SOUL eventually makes its way to Noelle's room to eavesdrop on their conversation. Noelle begins the conversation by rehashing something Kris did without the Player's presence the night before, after sealing the Cyber World Dark Fountain. Noelle said that Kris visited them after taking Berdly to the hospital and that they comforted Noelle by telling her that it was all a silly prank. But when Noelle asks Kris if it's okay if they say something, the player is given the option to tell her too "Proceed". Now in the room, the SOUL can join with Kris again. If the SOUL does not join with Kris quick enough, Kris will escape the room with Noelle, causing the Weird Route to be aborted. If the SOUL joins with Kris, as Noelle is trying to mention the things they told her not to mention to anyone else, Kris covers her mouth. When Noelle asks who they're afraid will hear, the Player may then assert it's presence by selecting "Me". From here, the Player forces Kris to draw closer to Noelle, reading the girl's mind, and basically chanting "Proceed". The Player may then "Equip" Noelle with the thorn representing the Thorn Ring, resulting in an image like broken glass glowing red with the SOUL's power. After this, a distraught and enraged Kris will take the SOUL to the bathroom and shove it in the trashcan before electing to kick the can and harm the SOUL, even at their own expense, only stopping when Asgore, who is visiting the house to help clean it, calls in and asks if they're okay. After this, leaving the Holiday Residence, Asgore gives Kris some hot-chocolate he pilfered from the Holidays. Heading out through Hometown, Susie mentions how upset she is that they didn't get to hang out with Noelle, and felt something strange when Noelle mentioned she wanted to talk to Kris alone, asking what they could talk about that Susie couldn't be included in. The SOUL is given no dialogue options, yet a choice in an empty box. Oddly enough, it stops raining and becomes sunny only during this empty choice, and Susie assumes it didn't have anything to do with her. After this, there's less references to the Weird Route, at least while in the Sanctuary Dark Worlds. When Susie leaves to collect information about the notes to be played on the piano, Ralsei asks if Kris would like to think about what Susie's doing. If the Player refuses to think about her, an option is given to think about Noelle. When doing so, the Player views a small red pixel that, after floating and slightly glowing for a moment, says "Thank you..." in Noelle's voice. Upon returning to Kris, the Player finds Kris on the ground, likely having had a panic attack, Susie tending to them. Susie notices Ralsei wasn't there and scolds him upon returning. When Kris is confronted by the Old Man, asking them where to go, Kris can respond "Nowhere" to which he will mention that it sounds like they're having "Relationship Trouble". During the tea party, the Old Man will mention how Kris seems to just be going through the motions, and tries to help them keep their chin up, telling them that it'll all be better, before offering Kris an apple which they ravenously devour, even part of the core. After sealing the first Dark Fountain, when searching for the combination to the lock on the door to the inner sanctuary, they find a shelf for prayer candles. Susie asks who Kris will pray for as they light a candle, and if the Player chooses "Noelle", Kris will kick the shelf violently. Later, when in the Choir chamber, Susie mentions about the piano and a story she had with one. Susie asks if Kris will keep playing the piano, and if the Player chooses "I will never play again", Kris will bite their own hand to stop the Player's words. In the Final Dark World, after Susie discovers and shatters the final prophecy, Ralsei breaks down into tears. If the Player tells Ralsei "It's okay not to smile", Ralsei will mention that if there is another path besides the one they're on, that it could possibly be worse. Finally, as the night comes to an end, the Fountains are sealed, and Kris returns home to find their mother dancing with Sans, Kris decides to go to bed early when they're called by Mayor Carol, who leaves a message, asking if Kris is going to the festival tomorrow, as Noelle really is looking forward to seeing them there. As the chapter comes to a close, we see an image of that once small, red pixel, having become far larger by comparison...
Future chapters
The Fifth and subsequent chapters are still in development. Chapter Five is expected to release out in 2026.[12] Toby Fox has stated that the first 4 chapters would be priced at $24.99 USD, and that the rest of the chapter to be finished would be added on as a free update.[9] Chapter 5 was originally planned to release with Chapters 3 and 4, but was delayed until 2026.
Additionally, the existence of Chapters 6 and 7 is indicated on the main menu of the game when selecting between Chapters 1 and 2, though no information about these or any further chapters have been revealed. The game files include title card graphics for Chapters 0, 8, 9, and 10, but these could just be for testing.[13]
The ending of the Fourth Chapter sees the Mysterious Voice from the Vessel Creation confirming that the story is half way over.
Differences from Undertale
- Deltarune allows keeping 3 SAVE files at once and the option to RESET has been replaced with the machanic of deleting files.
- There is now the option to run by holding "[CANCEL]" button or enabling Auto-Run in the Config menu.
- Enemies appear in the overworld as obstacles as opposed to Encounters being randomized.
- It is not possible to flee from battles.
- The in-game menu in the Dark World is much more complex, with game settings, detailed Stats, various Equipment, and different types of items.
- Deltarune has been confirmed to only have one ending, unlike Undertale which has 93.
Development
Pre-Release
The concept for Deltarune came to a fever dream Toby Fox had in college in 2011. The dream was an ending to a game, and he became determined to create it.[14]
Toby Fox credits his 2012 inspiration for making an RPG, leading to both Undertale and Deltarune, to the unique art of kanotynes, who designed Lancer, Rudinn, Clover, Hathy, King, Jevil, and the uncredited King of Diamonds. While Fox's first RPG was Undertale, his original game idea associated with kanotynes's character designs would later become Deltarune.[15] kanotynes's designs for Lancer, Rudinn, Clover, Hathy, and King were part of a set of 52 unique playing cards which she had devised as a project for a design class, with the full set being complete by March 29, 2012.[16]
Chapter 1
Temmie Chang, who previously worked on Undertale, also worked on Deltarune's first chapter, contributing more graphics than she had for Undertale. She is credited as "Main Artist, Animator, & Cleanup" on Background, Overworld, Battle, Sepia and Menu Art.
keiko_fukuichi, a translator at 8-4 Ltd who also worked on Undertale, translated the game into Japanese.
Fox found Laura Shigihara, who sang and arranged the ending ballad Don't Forget, through Kan Gao's game, To the Moon.
With no prior warning, Chapter 1 of Deltarune was teased for one day on the Undertale Twitter before its release on October 31, 2018. On release, the game was disguised as a survey regarding "something new" Toby Fox had planned, saying it would "all start with [the players'] feedback." As such, the game's folders and shortcuts are named "SURVEY_PROGRAM" by the installer, although the actual game executable is called "DELTARUNE." Toby Fox stated he really wanted players to believe the game was related to Undertale, so he tried to imitate Undertale at the beginning of Deltarune, even going as far to make two different choice menus.[17]
Players were asked to refrain from discussing what was in the game, or even what it was, for twenty-four hours after the release. On November 1st, 2018, Fox made the chapter's soundtrack available on Bandcamp.
Unlike the first demo for Undertale, the creation of Deltarune's first chapter took a few years, and a full version would likely take over 7 years for Fox to complete as "a single person (and Temmie)". He has therefore floated the idea of assembling a team to work on the game with him. Fox does not intend to make a Kickstarter campaign for Deltarune, and initially planned to release all potential remaining chapters simultaneously as a single-purchase game if it was completed. There is currently no projected timeline for the game's release or information about what platforms it will support in total, and some things about Chapter 1 may be changed prior to a full-game release,[18] though the game is actively being worked on.[19]
Chapter 2
On September 15th, 2020, Toby Fox announced a development update on Chapter 2 and future chapters. In March 2019, Toby attempted investigating alternative engines to GameMaker before deciding to go back to GameMaker, believing it to still be the best fit for the project. Proper development of Chapter 2 would begin on May 2020. In the same update, he posted rough estimates for the completion of Chapter 2 and future chapters, announced he now had a team helping him develop the game amid chronic wrist and hand pain, and that he was looking for applicants to help develop Chapter 3 onward. on September 16th, 2020, he had already received 1000 applications.[20]
On September 15th, 2021 during a YouTube livestream celebrating Undertale's 6th Anniversary it was announced that Chapter 2 of Deltarune would release on September 17th, 2021 for PC and Mac.
Chapters 3, 4, and 5
Following the release of Chapter 2, Fox stated that the game's third, fourth, and fifth chapters would be released as a single paid title once completed with no details being provided of Chapters 6 and 7. [21]. This was later shown to be incorrect as Chapters 3 and 4 released without Chapter 5, with Chapterr 5 being confirmed for 2026.
On May 2022, Toby made an additional comment to a Deltarune concept art tweet, stating that development for Chapters 3-5 was going well, and he had hired more people to help with the game's development.[22]
On September 15th, 2022, Toby announced a development update, reaffirming the steady progress and showcased screenshot and music previews for Chapter 4. At the end of the post, he revealed the Spamton Sweepstakes event, a twenty-four hour charity/auction campaign that included Deltarune-related items, teasers, and pre-game anecdotes.[23]
In the Halloween 2023 Undertale/Deltarune Newsletter, Toby announced that he intends to release Deltarune for purchase once Chapter 4 is completed. He also has hired a new producer that will help speed up the game development process for future chapters.
In the Summer 2024 Undertale/Deltarune Newsletter, Toby revealed a series of "quests" the development team has to complete before Chapters 3 & 4 can be released. Among these is testing a new function in GameMaker called game_change that enables separately launching different games in the engine. A public test of game_change through an updated version of Chapters 1 & 2 with the feature implemented was released on November 25, 2024.[24][25] Work on Chapter 5 has been done in the meantime before game_change's release.[26] Additional quests before Chapter 3 & 4's release include completing the console versions, the Japanese translation, and bugfixes.
In the Autumn 2024 Undertale/Deltarune Newsletter, Toby Fox confirmed that the development team has met the producer's internal deadline for Chapter 3 & 4's main content, and that he has completed all the work he could do before localization and testing. He additionally announced that anyone not working on localization, console porting, or fixes are now working on Chapter 5, which will be the team's main focus moving forward. On Halloween 2024 for Chapter 1's 6th anniversary, Toby Fox confirmed that Chapters 3 & 4 will "100%" release in 2025, with a more specific release date being dependent on localization and console porting.[27]
In the Holiday 2024 Undertale/Deltarune Newsletter, Toby Fox talked more openly about game_change and the unforeseen issues it brought across the entire game, including reintroducing previously fixed bugs. Toby remarked it seems to "work okay", and announced prior to the newsletter that Version 3 of the feature's demo will likely be the last version.[28] Toby also expressed that this will not be the last time GameMaker will have to be updated again for Deltarune, and it may lead to even more problems for Chapters 1-4 going forward. Chapters 3 & 4 have been completed except for translation and bug testing, and have been put on hold from releasing until those steps are completed. Chapter 3 still requires work on console-related aspects. Chapter 4's first Japanese translation pass was implemented; its final pass will take "some months" before completion and will be pending PC testing afterward, followed by console testing on both Chapters 3 & 4. Recent hires to the development team have been working on Chapter 5 in tandem with the rest of development. Toby reiterated that Chapters 3 & 4 are still releasing in 2025.
Following the holiday newsletter, Toby Fox has given smaller, more frequent status updates of Chapter 3 & 4's translation, testing, console porting, and bug fixing on his Bluesky account since January 6, 2025.[29]
The release dates for Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 were announced on April 2, 2025 in the Nintendo Switch 2 direct and in an official Undertale/Deltarune Newsletter. On the same day, Toby confirmed the price at $24.99. Toby also confirmed that it will release on all platforms on the same date.
Updates
Main article: Version DifferencesTrivia
- Deltarune is an anagram of Undertale.
- The deltarune logo has no capitalized letters, in contrast to UNDERTALE, which is in all caps. Despite this, any in-game mention of the game's namesake is always in all caps.
- Toby Fox has stated that the events of Deltarune are separate from Undertale, being neither a sequel nor a prequel but rather taking place in an alternate world. Despite this, it has been suggested that there may be connections between the two games, with Deltarune being presented as part of the UNDERTALE series in store descriptions.[30][31]
- The Delta Rune is an emblem found displayed across the worlds of Deltarune and Undertale. In Undertale, it represents the legend of the angel that will empty the underground while in Deltarune, it represents the heroes of Ralsei's prophecy.
- Toby Fox stated that the ending will be the same no matter what the player does, however this is followed by a question mark in the steam and Itch.io store pages for the Deltarune Chapter 1 and 2 demos, which suggests there could actually be more than one ending to the game.
- The user agreement that appears when running the installer for Deltarune only has a single, unexplained line that states that the player will "ACCEPT EVERYTHING THAT WILL HAPPEN FROM NOW ON."
- The subdomain "real.deltarune.com" redirects to starmen.net, an EarthBound fan forum where Toby Fox was a regular in the late 2000s and early 2010s. It's unknown if this redirect was made by Toby himself or by Fangamer.
- Although Undertale was ported to Xbox One, there has been no word on an Xbox version of Deltarune. This may be because a necessary GameMaker feature doesn't support Xbox.[32]
- There is an unused subpage on the Deltarune website, "deltarune.com/mobile/", that would appear when attempting to download Chapter 1 on mobile devices, and state that it is not compatible. After the release of Chapter 2, the "PC / Mac" download option has since linked to Deltarune's Steam and itch.io pages on all devices. There has been no word on mobile versions of Deltarune.
