As Spring starts knocking on our door, we’re all starting to daydream about luscious trees, vibrant blossoms, and warmer weather.
Another thought that quickly occurs to most is a to-do list of all the chores we need to complete to get our garden ready for picnics, sunbathing sessions, and more.
But, when is the right time to dust off the lawnmower and cut your grass for the first time this year?
Here’s everything you need to know.
When should I start cutting my grass?
There is no exact date to start mowing your lawn, as it depends on the conditions of your garden and how the weather has been.
As a general rule of thumb, it’s wise to start keeping an eye on the weather and doing your first grass cut sometime after the start of March.
If the ground is frosty or you know a frost is due to happen the next day, avoid cutting your grass as you could damage the soil.
However, if the warmer weather has taken over, go ahead and give your grass a cut. It is advised that, if possible, you keep your first grass cut high.
As the temperature increases and your lawn starts growing faster, you can start mowing weekly and slowly lowering your cutting height.
To keep your grass healthy and vibrant, you should try to avoid cutting below 1.5 inches.
You can continue cutting your grass until October.
Simply base your cutting frequency and mowing height decisions on how warm or cold the weather is.
Through really hot weeks, you will notice that your lawn growth will slow down. In those instances, try to mow every two weeks.
