I was never any good at it [basketball], although I'm 6-2 and did go out for football and track. In those days I was considered quite tall for my age - an inch taller and you were considered too gangly or something. -- The Town Talk, 1987

Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 3/Dec/25I had no issue with Hackman being listed 6ft2 to be honest. He looked it throughout most of his career. Even in No Way Out and Missippi Burning looked about it still……This listing is the lowest I’d ever go. I personally think peak he is right between Connery (188.5cm) and Caine (187.5cm) Canson said on 23/Nov/25He was listed at 6’2 Before. This was likely near a low if he got down to 6’1.75” Gemetr11 said on 19/Nov/25Deserve upgrade to 6’2 Cara said on 3/Oct/25I Still believe that he was 6 ft 2 in the 60s and 70s, but probably lost a little bit of height by the 80s. He really looked tall in French Connection, Bonnie and Clyde and the Conversations. He was already kinda old when started becoming famous anyway. Arch Stanton said on 19/Sep/25Yes, Hackman had the demeanour of a crooked cop. When you think of the greatest actors of the 1970s, Caine, Hackman and Redford are all in that creme da la creme list. Hope we don't lose Caine this year too! Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 17/Sep/25Arch the difference between them is that Caine was rangy and Hackman was broad……Caine had better style and dressed well whereas Hackman had a more rugged and hardened exterior, more adept at playing authority figures……more naturally imposing. Both legends of the business for sure though. They don’t make them like this anymore. Arch Stanton said on 13/Sep/25Hackman and Caine at a little under 6'2" makes the most sense from what I've seen, two of the very best in the business. Canson said on 21/Jul/25This aligns if he did measure 6’1.5 unless he had lost height by then. Means Lindo wasn’t the full 6’4 either which I’ve always suspected. bmb said on 20/Jul/25In the movie Eureka, during the investigation scene after his character's death, his character was measured at 'Six feet, one and a half inches'. Could it be a figure he could've also gone with?Editor RobIt's quite possible and rounded to 6ft 2. Gerald S said on 27/May/25Rob, can you add his THE FRENCH CONNECTION co-star, Fernando Rey? A good 5’9.5” I’d say, 5’9.75” not to be ruled out for youth. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 2/May/25Bonnie & Clyde is in occasion where he looked at least 6ft2, noticeably taller than Warren Beatty. Anything less than a solid 187cm should be ruled out given how he looked next to solid 6ft1 guys even later on…..proper 187cm guys like Hackman and Caine are perfectly entitled to claim 6ft2…..it’s a great height for the screen. You’re plentifully tall but not overtly so where you look ungainly….. Rory said on 30/Apr/25No I think 6ft1.75 is perfect for Hackman. In the real world he looked a 6ft2 guy to the majority, to us aficionados on this site with more interest in height, he looked a guy who probably fell 1cm under it at worst. 6ft1.5 is a tad too low. Canson said on 28/Apr/25@Editor Rob: do you think Reagan had lost height by time the pic above was taken? Editor RobProbably a fraction at that stage, just a question how big a fraction it was. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 27/Apr/25Great to be back, Rob! Like everyone, I was very sad to hear of Gene’s passing even though he’d long retired along with his beloved wife. The circumstances still make no sense. I think this mark would be the lowest I’d go for him. He was generally taller than 6ft1 guys even in later years, like Kevin Costner in No Way Out Gerald S said on 26/Apr/25Rob, I rewatched nearly all his early films after his death and still shout 6’1.5” peak! Canson said on 26/Apr/25He did look two inches shorter than lindo in Heist. reachjtm said on 26/Apr/25btw don't think the downgrade was necessary but whatever Editor RobJust seeing more of him from the 80's, I thought the odds stacked up that he might just fall shy of his claim. reachjtm said on 26/Apr/25rip Gene Hackman. he lived a very long life but it's a shame that his death was a tragedy. Gerald S said on 29/Nov/24Rob, can we roll with a weak 5’10” for Emmet’s peak? I acknowledge the full 5’10” even at peak is a stretch. The Jerk, Blade Runner, Straight Time, Blood Simple… so many memorable film credits. Editor RobI think he had to have been close to it. Gerald S said on 22/Nov/24Rob, can you add his NARROW MARGIN co-star, M. Emmet Walsh? 5’10” range when he stood straight. Editor RobHe never seemed 5ft 10, but you're right about his posture being poor a lot of the time. In his earlier career that figure could be right. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 25/Apr/24Hackman: Weak 188cm Caine: Strong 187cm Connery: Solid 188cm Jtm said on 25/Apr/24sorry but i don't agree with Gerald S. he looks taller than Caine especially considering Caine has better posture. Canson said on 20/Apr/24He actually can look a legit 6’2” most of the time more so than others but 6’1.75 at a low is possible. Wonder who was taller between he and Connery at their peaks? Gerald S said on 20/Apr/24Rob, can we compromise on 6’1.75”? I have always thought 6’1.5ish for Hackman, maybe 6’1.75” at a pinch, but never a full 6’2”. Same height as Caine Click Here Editor RobThere's a few guys in that bracket who may well have been a fraction shy of 6ft 2, maybe Hackman and Paul Walker spring to mind. Jtm said on 26/Sep/23beatty listed 6'1.25 here now and claims 6'1 but some reason several posters here believe he was taller. Arch Stanton said on 21/Sep/23There are scenes in Bonnie and Clyde where there is a very noticeable difference between Gene Hackman and Warren Beatty, hard to see them both at 6 ft 2!! Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 1/Jun/23Hong, I'd say by the then they'd both lost a bit. Here they are back in the day Click Here They look pretty identical to be honest, Hackman has a longer head than Caine which might distort things. Connery edged him Click Here Click Here Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 9/May/23I'd still keep Gene at a flat 6ft2, right between Caine and Connery John Sulu said on 27/Apr/23Hey Rob, although there could be quite a lot of 6ft 2 or taller adult males at their peak, are there fewer in that height range once they reach their 90's? Editor RobSince the average 90 year old will have lost near 3 inches, the percentage who are still 6ft 2 will be a lot less - equivalent to the 6ft 5 men of that era in terms of percentiles. Hong said on 17/Apr/23Click Here Here is Gene with Caine, they do look similar in height, both guys just shy of 6ft2 peak in my opinion. Arch Stanton said on 16/Apr/23He looks totally unrecognizable there Gerald! Hope he's OK, he's looking extremely thin there for him. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 7/Jan/23If you watch the movie, the difference between Hackman and Cusack isn’t as big but Gene probably had lost some by then. Roughly an inch between them. But John could be 6ft2 and change. At the time of retirement I still place Gene in 6ft1 zone. berta said on 7/Jan/23thif reagan was 183 at that point then 187 looks likely. JordanG said on 21/Aug/22@Hong and @Rampage(-_-_-)Clover, I believe Gene's hat is giving him an advantage here and I'm going by the eye line. Not only that, John is slouching. Gene's eye line is RIGHT at the tip of John's nose. I'm 5'11 and when I had my picture taken with John Cusack, my eye line was SLIGHTLY lower than Gene's is in that scene. I remember Rob saying that if the eye line matches up with the nose, it's usually about 3 inches. Here I am with John Cusack: Click Here With my sneakers, I was about 6'0 and John had boots on, probably giving him an inch MAYBE a tad more. I'd say with footwear, we're about 6'0 and 6'3. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 19/Jul/226ft1 range with Cusack Hong said on 16/Jun/22@JordanG,in my opinion, Hackman is looking 6ft.5 next to Cusack in that clip,so by aged 75 he looks to have lost almost 2 inches from peak. Now aged 92 he is probably around 5ft11. JordanG said on 11/Jun/22I'm not sure if links to GIFs will work BUT there is a scene with John Cusack and Gene Hackman from 2005 in Runaway Jury. I have a feeling Gene is 6'0 here. Click Here Editor RobYeah John looked an inch taller there Tall Sam said on 12/May/22I think he was a good candidate for 6’1.75” but I could see going with 6’2” as his peak too. Hackman was a great actor and screen presence, but could be a difficult person to be around. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 7/May/22Sinclair, he’s not doing anything in acting these days so there’s no point really giving him a peak and current Sinclair said on 10/Mar/22Well, if Gene Hackman is still 6’2” today at 92 years of age (and I think he was only ever 6’1.5” at peak), then he has accomplished another major achievement. Tall In The Saddle said on 19/Nov/21@Rampage Are those photos actually that recent? I saw some photos of Gene from a while ago and he looked as you described and even then, somewhat gaunt and frail. Probably more noticeable compared to the husky guy he was when younger. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 26/Oct/21I think he had to have been close enough to 6ft2 on the nose Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 24/Oct/21I've seen recent photos of him where he's lookin quite gaunt and frail but they don't really offer much perspective on his height. I reckon he has a fair bit of height though Tall In The Saddle said on 13/Sep/21@MichaelMyers It would interesting to see how Gene stands currently. I hope he’s doing okay but I get the feeling that we won’t be seeing anymore of Hackman in terms of photos or vision. Perhaps it’s the exception to the rule for 90 + guys like Eastwood to remain solidly in the public eye. Most retire quietly and perhaps prefer people to remember as they once were. 90 + is no mean age but actors or not, things will start to give. MichaelMyers said on 12/Sep/216'2" peak. And since he's now 91 years old, I'm wondering what his current height would be. Canson said on 26/Aug/21@Rampage: he may have been the full 6’2” peak. Not sure when he began losing his height. But in Heist he looked a full 2” shorter than Delroy Lindo. That was 2001. Now I also don’t think Lindo was a full 6’4 guy. Maybe what Rob lists him though because I actually get a taller impression of him than I do Conan. I have Conan 6’3.5” flat in the afternoon for his peak maybe a hair over and maybe just a hair under or right at 6’3.5” today. I wouldn't say Gene towered over Hugh but there was a noticeable difference. 6ft1.75. Rory said on 16/May/21Could quite often look more 6ft1 than 6ft2 in Mississippi Burning but then did look close to 6ft2 besides Lee Ermey in one scene. Plus he was 58 by then so possibly a small loss incurred. I think 6ft1.75 prime is the best fit for Hackman. Perfectly entitled to claim 6ft2, but probably got down to 187cm at night. Tall In The Saddle said on 9/May/21I guess the Reagan photo is a bit deceiving because on one hand Gene’s eye level doesn’t appear to be much higher than Reagan’s but then Gene’s forehead is notably that much longer. Based on where you would estimate the tops of their bare heads to be I would say Gene has an easy 2” advantage. Interesting to see how Gene is looking these days. Not necessarily for just height purposes but general appearance also. Getting into your 90s is no mean feat. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 8/May/21Looking at that photo with Reagan again...if Ronald was still for argument sake closer to 6ft than 5ft11, Gene is still close to 6ft2 there. Like Connery and Caine, he was another that held on to his height as he aged. Rory, that mark at worst I think...still feel a normal flat 6ft2 guy in his prime Rory said on 28/Apr/216ft1.75 is definitely possible peak but 6ft1 flat isnt. While 6'1 flat guys can be considered big in most countries when they have a wide frame like Hackman did, it would be hard for him to come off as tall as often as he did especially back in the 70s. I know in Europe heights have increased massively since then, but in the US our average has been stable if not declined a bit. 70s Hackman was 6'2. By the time of Hoosiers he was probably under this. However, later at an age when one wouldn't assume much height loss if any, there were comparisons, at least to me, that seemed to suggest Hackman to be around the 6'1.5" mark. For me, Hackman is one of those guys that could rate around 6'2" for 80 per cent of the time but that bit less for the balance of comparisons. Not a solid estimate guy like, say peak Goldblum, who held up strongly for 6'4.25" at every turn. There wouldn't be a lot in it but I would guess Connery at full attention would have the edge but I'm not 100% on that. Connery and Caine very similar and I generally don't see the advantage that many give Connery. Some time back I linked a scene from THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING when they both stand to attention together, march into a room and then march out. Only in that scene can I see a clear .5" to Connery without any undue advantage or disadvantage to either man. Generally, otherwise, I feel that Caine's posture was better held than Connery's which might've lent to Caine appearing closer in height than he was. @Hong Strangely, a number of promo photos from that movie do depict Aykroyd as appearing slightly taller. In truth, the real vision from the movie appears to indicate Hackman as holding the slight advantage but no more than .5" Tall Sam said on 25/Sep/20There's lot of occasions where you can see Michael Caine and Sean Connery and I have a hard time seeing a half inch between them...I maybe could see defending a weak cm for Connery but they are basically very similar height IMO. I have Sean 6'1.75" max., so I would guess Hackman at either the same or touch less at 6'1.5". In later years at least, photos of Hackman and Caine together seem to indicate a slight edge to Gene. Jtm said on 25/Jul/20I actually think Caine was more 6'1. Tall Sam said on 19/Jul/20I could see Connery, Hackman, as well as Michael Caine being of similar height, weak 6'2" guys. Would be interesting to see him near someone like Chris Pratt today. Canson said on 19/Jul/20I doubt Denzel was ever 6’ 3/8 Rory said on 18/Jul/20Hackman looked about 2cm taller than Denzel in Crimson tide. I can understand why you might think of them as being the same because the difference was small, but still noticeable.the scene at the beginning where they shake hands highlights this. Hackman was 64/65 then so say a good half inch lost. I think at that point Denzel 6ft3/8ths and Hackman 6ft1 1/8th. Peak 6ft1.75 houss said on 18/Jul/20It's impossible for him to be more than 6ft , i saw him yesterday in a movie next to Morgan Freeman he looked 2 inches shorter than him Canson said on 16/Jul/20@Rampage: I agree with you. I still can’t tell who Would be taller between Hackman and Connery. Rory said on 15/Jul/20Hackman was definitely taller than Denzel in Crimson Tide. When they shake hands at the beggining he clearly edges him and thereafter. That being said the difference looked less than an inch I'd say. If Denzel was 6ft0.25 then Hackman looked 6ft1, or alternatively Denzel 6ft0.5 and Hackman 6ft1.25. Difficult to say how much Hackman had lost by that point, you'd expect a good half inch though. Possibly from a weak 6ft2 prime to a solid 6ft1 by mid 90s. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 14/Jul/20Hackman I would keep at 6ft2, there’s enough out there showing him to be a little under and a little over this mark. Beatty I would give 6ft1½ Jtm said on 7/Jul/20He was also taller than Beatty in Lilith. I guess that proves Hackman was 6'2 or very close and Beatty was never over 6'1. Hong said on 19/Apr/20Click Here Hong said on 23/Feb/20Looked the same height as Denzel Washington in Crimson tide, back in 95 when he was aged 65.Washington was in the 6ft.05 range. That would be a 1.5 inch loss for Hackman by 65 years old.I personally believe Hackman was a solid 6ft1 guy peak. Kimberly said on 29/Dec/19People are getting a little crazy about this guy's height I suppose I believe he was maybe six two who would want to argue about that to the point of name-calling let's suffice it to say he was a pretty tall man Ian C. said on 21/Sep/19Oops. I just went back to look at the French Connection scenes with Eddie Egan, and Egan wasn't short. He looked to be around six feet tall-a burly, tough-looking Irishman. You know how sometimes you come up with a clever thought that you like so much that you ignore the evidence that it isn't correct? That's what I did here. Sorry about that. Ian C. said on 20/Sep/19Come to think of it, Eddie Egan, who was the police detective who cracked the French Connection case in real life, was in the movie The French Connection. (He played Walt Simonson, Popeye's boss.) Egan was kind of short. Gene Hackman looked more like a policeman (as I imagine they must look) than Egan. Hmm. Suppose you wanted to make a movie about a German chancellor who set out to conquer Europe. Would you hire an actor who was five foot nine and stout, and had a silly moustache? Well no. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 11/Aug/19Saw Get Shorty the other night and I’m convinced he was still close to 6ft2 then. He had more height over Travolta than Dennis Farina and James Gandolfini...and was 2in below Delroy Lindo (weak 6ft4) Tall Sam said on 7/Aug/19The cutoff, Ian C., in the US I believe is 5'7" for men to be police officers (and 5'2" for women so quite small), a lot of cops I see are within average height range but are in better than average shape. A lot I've seen are even shortish but bulky (a bit of fat but strong) like Michael Chiklis type. Hackman was a true everyman and could be believable play a guy doing ordinary jobs, and also barking orders to a bunch of detectives. Ian C. said on 29/Jun/19Hackman actually looked like a real policeman which is one of the many reasons why his performance in The French Connection movies is so good. It is a simple thing to compile a list of movies with actors playing cops who were badly miscast. Al Pacino has played a policeman in at least five movies that I can think of, which is ridiculous. Even Clint Eastwood, with his Elvis hair, looks miscast as Dirty Harry. Frank Sinatra has played a cop and so have Richard Dreyfuss and Billy Crystal, all short and physically ordinary men. Of course, I'm assuming that real cops are big and tall, which as far as I know is true. In Canada we have the Mounties, who have a minimum height requirement of five foot ten for male applicants. But you don't have to be just tall, you've got to be built like a hockey player, and probably the first question they ask you when you apply to be a cop is, what sports did you play in high school. movieguy12 said on 31/May/19Edged out Lee Marvin in Prime Cut and didn't look much shorter than 6'4'' Gregory Walcott in same film. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 14/Mar/19He held on to 6ft2 for years Canson said on 1/Mar/19Enemy of the State was filmed before Heist. He actually could look taller than Will Smith in some scenes. James Keffer (185 cm) said on 25/Jan/19Didn't really look much taller than Russell Crowe (5'11) in the quick and the dead. He also didn't look any taller than Leonardo DiCaprio (6'0.25) in that movie. In the 90s, he didn't look much, if any taller than 183 cm but he could've been 6'2 peak or at least close. Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 12/Jan/19I think a prime Hackman was 188cm on the nose which Wilson looks today. Paleman said on 1/Mar/18It's hard to believe he stood any shorter than 6'2" at his peak. I remember a scene in The Conversation where he's walking down the street and he looks way, way taller than everybody else. He could've been six foot one and a half, but any claims at flat 6'1" are just ridiculous. Newman said on 1/Mar/18There seems to be a lot of people here convinced he was the full 6ft 2. I'm not convinced; I think he was more 6-1, possibly a half inch taller. He only looked about half an inch taller than 6ft Nick Nolte in the 1983 film Under Fire. Someone mentioned "No Way Out" below. I've seen this film a few times now and there's plenty of stills on Google. He DIDN'T look taller than 1m85 Kevin Costner. I don't know, maybe Kevin loaded up his shoes; it's been suggested elsewhere on this website. Hackman is a great actor by the way, he's been in some fantastic films, but I don't think he looked the full 6-2. Jordan87 said on 26/Feb/18Tall Sam, I enjoyed French Connection 2, Hackman's performance when he was getting off Heroin was amazing to say the least. He is taller than everybody. Tall Sam said on 31/Jan/18I agree, Hackman looked like a big dude in his 70s films, in a movie like Scarecrow with Al Pacino, he towers easily over most of the other actors, Superman across from Christopher Reeve was the first time I can think where he's noticeably shorter than another actor. Roy Scheider and Hackman were great actors. Jordan87 said on 29/Jan/18Hackman looked very tall in The French Connection, Just watched it this weekend for the first time in a very long time.
