Simón Bolívar (1783-1830) known as "The Liberator" fought in more than 200 battles against the Spanish in the fight for South American independence. Bolívar provided the political and military leadership that freed Bolivia, Colombia (then including Panama), Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela from the Spanish rule. Water fountains that adjoin the Bolívar statue represent these nations. Venezuela presented this 27-foot bronze equestrian statue to the United States in 1959.
