His gameplay centers around dealing rapid and widespread Hydro damage through his Elemental Skill, which converts his normal attacks into quick Hydro strikes. His Elemental Burst creates a large AoE that rains down Hydro swords, damaging enemies and buffing allies' Normal Attack damage. Lore-wise, Kamisato Ayato is the enigmatic and cunning head of the Yashiro Commission's Kamisato Clan and Ayaka's older brother.

What Kind of Character is Kamisato Ayato?
Ayato is an On-Field Hydro DPS that can be played Off-Field. He is considered a generalist DPS due to how flexible he is, since he can fit into many team comps with ease.
His damage output hasn't been on-par with other modern DPS for a while now, but the release of Furina, Escoffier and Citlali have given him options to increase his DPS in a way that allows him to clear most endgame content.

Roles & Playstyle Of Ayato and His Strengths and Weakness
On-Field DPS Ayato
Ayato is an On-Field DPS at his core. He normally wants to use his Elemental Skill to activate enter the Takimeguri Kanka state. In this state, he is able to use his clone or Shunsuiken to perform his signature Hydro-infused Normal Attacks. Both his Enhanced Normal Attacks in this state and his Elemental Burst have wide areas-of-effect (AoE), making him perform very well into multi-target scenarios while still being decent into single-target.
Pros and Cons of On-Field DPS Ayato
Pros
- Easy to play and can fit into a variety of teams.
- Wide AoE on Enhanced Normal Attacks and on Elemental Burst.
- Applies Hydro in rapid succession, allowing him to trigger a lot of reactions consistently.
Cons
- Long Burst animation can be time-consuming.
- Flexible but doesn't really excel at a given niche.
- Outclassed by other Hydro DPS characters in both the On-Field and Off-Field category.
- There is no team where he is the 'best' option to use.
Off-Field Burst DPS Ayato
Ayato has the ability to be played as an Off-Field DPS that swaps in to Elemental Skill into Normal Attack combo before ending with his Elemental Burst. He needs to be supplied enough Energy Recharge% to achieve consistent Burst uptime. He has less team options with this playstyle since there are usually characters that do the job better. However, it's still a viable way of using him if you want to test it out.
Pros and Cons of Off-Field Burst DPS Ayato
Pros
- Easy to play.
- Wide Burst AoE helps apply Hydro to many targets.
Cons
- High Energy Cost for Elemental Burst.
- Doesn't offer much buffs apart, apart from Normal Attack DMG increase and his artifact set buff.
- Doesn't use his kit to its full potential.
Best Build for Kamisato Ayato
Ayato is a Hydro Character that can be played either On-Field and Off-Field, but performs better as the Main DPS. His main source of damage are his enhanced Normal Attacks after activating Elemental Skill, while his Elemental Burst applies Hydro in a wide area which allows him to be played more flexibly. Depending on the intended playstyle, Ayato's weapons, artifacts and teammate options may change.
Ayato's top damage team features Furina, Escoffier, and Citlali. As a Hydro unit, Ayato benefits from all their buffs and enables Escoffier’s Inspiration-Immersed Seasoning passive. He also gains strong Hydro RES shred from Escoffier and Citlali, while Furina provides significant DMG% bonus (which is the same as Hydro DMG bonus).
Marechaussee Hunter is his best artifact set here due to Furina’s HP drain and Escoffier’s healing. Heart of Depth is still his best generalist set and can work in this comp, though it’s less optimal than Marechaussee.

Ayato's Off-Field playstyle isn’t very popular but is usable. It turns him into a Burst DPS who uses his Skill at least once per rotation to gain Energy for consistent Burst uptime. While there are better Off-Field Hydro applicators, he's a decent pick for Nilou Bloom teams due to his Burst’s wide Area of Effect (AoE). He’ll need high Energy Recharge with this setup, so plan accordingly.
His weapon choices aren’t strict. It can focus on Energy gain, like Favonius Sword, or general damage, since his Burst still supports Team DPS, like Primordial Jade Cutter and Wolf-Fang.

Best Weapon for Kamisato Ayato
Ayato's Signature Weapon remains the best option for him for his On-Field playstyle. But his flexibility as a Hydro DPS character allows him to have a broad selection of usable weapons. The ranking shifts if you want to use Ayato as an Off-Field Burst DPS.

How to GetRating
Best
Haran Geppaku Futsu
Get from Limited Banner- His signature that has everything Ayato wants: Normal Attack DMG and Elemental DMG bonus. - Crit Rate main stat makes reaching the ideal stats easier. - Can be a generalist weapon that is usable on other DPS Sword characters.
2nd
Primordial Jade Cutter
Get from Limited Banner - One of the generalist limited swords. - Pulls ahead over the other choices below due to the HP% bonus, that Ayato does scale off of. - Good on multiple Sword characters.
3rd
Mistsplitter Reforged
Get from Limited Banner- Crit main stat can make achieving the stat goals easier. - One of the generalist limited swords. - Ayato can benefit from most of the passive, but due to his long combos, he might not get full stacks. This weapon is still good for him regardless. - Good on multiple Sword characters.
4th
Uraku Misugiri
Get from Limited Banner- Crit main stat that can make reaching the 1:2 Crit ratio easier. - One of the generalist limited swords. - Ayato can make use of the Normal Attack DMG and Elemental Skill DMG. - Better with another geo character, but still good without due to the unconditional first half of the passive.
5th
Light of Foliar Incision
Get from Banners- Crit main stat that can make reaching the 1:2 Crit ratio easier. - Best in teams where Ayato can build or receive Elemental Mastery (EM) to get something out of the passive that translates EM to a Normal Attack and Elemental Skill DMG buff. - A usable stat-stick on other Sword DPS characters, but not a lot due to the EM requirement.
6th
The Black Sword
Get from Battle Pass- Crit main stats can help reach the ideal Crit Ratio easier. - One of Ayato's best 4-star options due to the Normal Attack buff. - The small healing is nice but not super impactful. - No need to get refinements since it does not lead to a big increase.
Haran Geppaku Futsu is usable on other sword characters, making its pull value slightly higher, but because other 5-Star generalist swords outclass it, it is only recommended to get if you already have Ayato. Most of the generalist 5-Star limited Swords should all perform similarly, with some being more useful than others. Any Crit main stat sword should do fine even just as a stat-stick.

Reward From Past Event (Iktomi Spiritseeking Scrolls) - Increases Normal Attack and Normal Attack CRIT rate. - Requires a shielder in the team, otherwise the passive will not work. - No longer obtainable if you played after the event ended.
Ayato's Free-to-Play options as an On-Field DPS have a few standout choices that should all result in similar performance with small differences in damage. The craftable sword is best when fully refined, so this may take time if you do not have enough Billets.
Premium Weapons for Off-Field Burst DPS Ayato
Weapon
How to GetRating
Best
Primordial Jade Cutter
Get from Limited Banners- Crit main stat will still be good on Ayato with this playstyle since you want his Burst to contribute to the team DPS.- Unconditional passive which makes it easier to have Ayato's Burst still do damage even if he isn't the main damage source.- One of the universal Crit swords, which makes it valuable as an all-rounder weapon.
2nd
Skyward Blade
Get from Limited Banner- Energy Recharge% main stats will make it easier for Ayato to reach the Energy requirement. - Gives a small amount of CRIT Rate, which is still helpful.
3rd
Favonius Sword
Get from Limited Banner- Energy Recharge% main stats will make it easier for Ayato to reach the Energy requirement. - Provides Energy particles for other teammates as well. Requires Ayato be built with enough Crit so he can trigger the passive. - Best at R5.
4th
Xiphos' Moonlight
Get from Limited Banner- Best in Nilou Bloom teams due to the passive that gives teamwide Elemental Mastery (EM). - More Energy Recharge on Ayato results in more teamwide EM. - Outperforms Favonius Sword at R5, on-par with it at lower refinements.
Ayato's job as an Off-Field Burst DPS is use his Elemental Burst on-demand while also still dealing damage with it. Striking a balance between the Energy Recharge requirement and offensive stats may be difficult. Use whichever setup enables Ayato to charge his Burst to full every rotation consistently after using his Elemental Skill into Normal Attack combo once.

Weapon
How to GetRating

Harbinger of Dawn
Get From Banners or From NPCs- Provides Crit at the cost of maintaining 90% HP. - Because Ayato is less likely to get damaged while Off-Field, this weapon can help his Burst still do damage. Best at R5, which you should be able to get easily if you still roll on Banners. - Can be obtained after finishing NPC dialogue (Nanako in Inazuma and Eymen in Sumeru).
2nd F2P
Kagotsurube Isshin
Get From Kazuha's Story Quest - A nice source of extra damage from the Hewing Gale produced. - Gives a modest amount of ATK%. - Can be obtained for free by completing Kazuha's Story Quest. - Can still be decent on Burst DPS Ayato if there is no other option.
3rd(Forge)
Amenoma Kageuchi
Inazuma Forgeable (Craftable) Weapon- Restores Energy after using Elemental Burst provided you use Elemental Skill. - Best used for characters that can Skill three times within a short time. - Not recommded for Ayato since his Off-Field playstyle can only afford him to use Skill once.
Ayato's Free-to-Play options as an Off-Field Burst DPS have a few standout choices that should all result in similar performance with small differences in damage. The Inazuma craftable is generally not going to recommended if you have access to Harbinger of Dawn due to Ayato's usual gameplay not satisfying the passive requirements.

Kamisato Ayato Best Artifacts
Ayato's Artifact set choices will depend on the intended playstyle and team comp. Because of his flexibility, he has many options to choose from. See the recommendations below:
★★★★★- Best Generalist Artifact set for Ayato as an On-Field DPS. - It can perform well across multiple team comps. - Provides Hydro DMG%, Elemental Skill and Normal Attack DMG bonus, which Ayato benefits from.- Not so resin efficient since the other set in the domain (Blizzard Strayer) isn't a top-tier artifact choice anymore.
Gladiator's Finale
★★★★・- Another generalist set that can be good with a variety of team comps. - Cannot be farmed directly since they are drops from World Bosses. - The 4-piece bonus gives a lot of Normal Attack DMG, which is still a sizeable boost for Ayato. - Use this if you have a strong 4-piece set of it.
Nymph's Dream
★★★★・- This set is almost comparable to his first two best sets since it provides ATK%, Hydro DMG Bonus, Normal Attack, and Elemental Skill and Burst DMG bonus. - Ayato typically only gets 2 stacks.- Not as resin efficient since the other set in the domain (Vourukasha's Glow) is somewhat niche.
Echoes of an Offering
★★★・・- This set can be competitive with the others due to the Normal Attack DMG buff. - The passive is chance-based and has a tendency to be inconsistent when played with over 100 in-game ping.- Not as resin efficient since the other set in the domain (Vermillion Hereafter) is somewhat niche.
2-pc. Hydro DMG2-pc. Normal ATK DMG
★★・・・- Aside from the two sets listed here, you can mix and match 2-piece set effects while farming for a full 4-piece set.- The setup is not strict, and you can also use any combination between the 2-piece versions of:・Heart of Depth・Gladiator's Finale・Emblem of Severed Fate・Shimenawa's Reminiscence - 2-piece sets with very good sub-stats can be as good as 4-piece sets, with only small differences in damage.
Recommended Artifact Stats
Main: Flat HP Sub: Energy Recharge / CRIT Rate / CRIT DMG / ATK% / Elemental Mastery
Ayato's On-Field playstyle is very flexible when it comes to Artifact choices. His best set, Heart of Depth, will perform consistently across most teams he can be played in, but the other sets are still competitive. Use what is available to you and whichever set is more efficient to farm for you.

Emblem of Severed Fate
★★★★★- Best Artifact set for Off-Field Ayato who focuses on deploying his Burst often. - This set helps him meet his Energy requirements easier while also buffing the damage of the Burst. -Use Ayato's Elemental Skill and Normal Attack combo at least once every rotation.
Noblesse Oblige
★★・・ ・- Allows Ayato to provide additional buffs whenever he ults. - Not a lot of teams have use for Off-Field Ayato with this set, since there are better options.

Energy Recharge Is Good for Consistent Burst Uptime
Ayato as a Burst-only DPS wants to use his Elemental Burst every rotation. This can be made possible with a lot of Energy Recharge% on his Artifacts as well as additional Hydro teammates. His Burst still adds to total DPS, so ensure he still has offensive stats to allow the Elemental Burst to still deal damage.

- Ayato's strongest team that buffs his personal damage significantly with supports that can contribute to the total DPS. - Furina provides significant DMG buffs and damage. - Escoffier brings Cryo and Hydro RES shred, Cryo application and contributes a large portion to the team DPS. - Citlali adds more Hydro RES shred, the Scroll of the Hero of Cinder City set buff and the Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers passive.
This is arguably one of Ayato's strongest teams, following the release of Escoffier. He easily takes advantage of every buff that the other three provide, and the rotation is very easy to execute since none of them have very complex mechanics.
The biggest issue is the supports in this team are very contested. Ayato's damage can feel a bit lacking in comparison to the performance of other DPS characters with the same setup or having the three in their respective 'best' teams. Escoffier, Furina and Citlali do not need Ayato to show their value in an account, but Ayato may want the three of them to be on-par with the rest of the meta.

Basic Rotation For On-Field DPS Ayato
1. Use Elemental Burst2. Activate support abilities 3. Use Elemental Skill 4. Normal Attack x15 (you can hold Normal Attack instead)5. Repeat steps 2-4 6. Return to step 1
As the On-Field DPS, Ayato wants to use his Elemental Skill twice within a rotation to maximize the damage. This also helps him gain more Energy to fully charge his Elemental Burst. His Skill cooldown is a bit long, so you can fill this downtime by reactivating support abilities.
Basic Team Rotation for Off-Field Burst DPS Kamisato Ayato
Basic Rotation For Off-Field Burst DPS Kamisato Ayato
1. Use Elemental Burst2. Activate support abilities 3. Use Elemental Skill 4. Normal Attack x15 (you can hold Normal Attack instead)5. Return to step 1
Ayato prefers to be the On-Field DPS, but if you want to explore more playstyles, he can be used as Off-Field Burst DPS where he provides AoE Hydro application through his Elemental Burst. He wants to be able to use his Elemental Skill at least once in a rotation to ensure he still gets energy to get his Burst back up.
Basics Of Using Ayato
Ayato can be used as the On-Field Damage Dealer or Off-Field Burst sub-DPS. However, his DPS role is easier to build since he has enough field time to gain Energy Particles needed for his high Elemental Burst cost.
Use Elemental Skill to Infuse Normal Attacks with Hydro
Ayato's Elemental Skill is the centerpiece of his kit. It's his main source of damage. It allows him to enter Takimeguri Kanka state where his Normal Attacks become AoE Hydro attacks and can have its damage increased based on Ayato's Max HP through Namisen stacks.
Build ATK or HP?
Ayato has split scaling on his Abilities. While his Namisen stacks scale on his HP, it's not used in the majority of his attacks in Takimeguri Kanka state. Raising his Attack is the priority when building his equipment.
Use Elemental Burst to Increase Normal Attack Damage
Ayato's Elemental Burst plays a supportive role for his damage. It boosts the Normal Attack damage of characters within its range. It's also used by supports that hold Viridescent Venerer or Scroll set to buff Hydro DMG Bonus.
Elemental Burst is also Great for Off-Field Hydro Application
Ayato's Elemental Burst can also be used for its amazing Hydro application. Its wide range and multiple AoE attacks happening at the same time can trigger Elemental reactions easily.

Use his Burst, then switch out to another character
Ayato's kit makes him a great hydro applicator and driver. With his Skill and Burst having a long duration and consistent Hydro application, he can easily apply Hydro in a good rotation.
Has Both On-Field & Off-Field Skills
Ayato can fit well as either an on-fielder or a quick swap Burst DPS. He's not the best at either but he's a decent fit for a Hydro main DPS for most Hydro-focused team comps.

His Enhanced Normal Attacks are His Main Source of Damage
Ayato is going to perform at his best as a Main DPS type of character because of the way his kit is designed. His gameplay loop wants him to use his Elemental Skill to activate his special Hydro-infused Normal Attacks to trigger reactions.
His Burst Has a High Energy Requirement
Ayato's Elemental Burst applies Hydro in a wide circular AoE, which makes it ideal for multi-target scenarios. It also buffs the Normal Attack damage of anyone standing inside the radius. But its Energy cost is on the higher end, so he appreciates more Energy Recharge on his artifacts or another Hydro teammate to generate more Hydro Energy Particles.
The Burst Energy Cost isn't much of an issue when he is played On-Field, but does become a problem if you want to play him mostly Off-Field as a Burst DPS.
Should You Pull for Kamisato Ayato's Constellation Or Best Weapon?
Prioritize Haran Geppaku Futsu
Signature VS Constellations
Haran Geppaku Futsu > C2 or C3 > C1
Ayata's Signature Weapon Is a Solid Damage Increase
In comparison to his C1 that would only ever trigger when enemies are at 50% HP or less, Haran Geppaku Futsu is going to provide a more noticeable increase to Ayato's personal damage thanks to the Crit substat, the extra Elemental DMG bonus and the buff to Normal Attack DMG, all of which Ayato benefits from. His Signature Weapon also has the added bonus of being decent on sword characters who mainly use their Normal Attacks as their primary source of damage.
If you would like to pull his constellations but have no intention of going to C6, then C2 that increases the maximum count of the "Namisen" effect from his skill and C3 that adds levels to said skill will both be valid stopping points. Both C2 and C3 should be an upgrade versus his performance at C0 and C1.
Recommendation if You Have Uraku Misugiri
C2 or C3 > C1 > Haran Geppaku Futsu
Other 5-star Crit Swords Will Be Competitive
Uraku Misugiri is almost as good as Haran Geppaku Futsu on Ayato with a passive that is a lot more universal. Ayato's Signature Weapons starts losing priority for your account if you happen to have it, or any other 5-star Crit sword such as the Primordial Jade Cutter or Mistsplitter Reforged. In this case, you're likely to gain more value out of pulling for his constellations instead.

Kamisato Ayato shifts positions and enters the Takimeguri Kanka state. After this shift, he will leave a watery illusion at his original location. After it is formed, the watery illusion will explode if opponents are nearby or after its duration ends, dealing AoE Hydro DMG.
Takimeguri Kanka
Effect
In this state, Kamisato Ayato uses his Shunsuiken to engage in blindingly fast attacks, causing DMG from his Normal Attacks to be converted into AoE Hydro DMG. This cannot be overridden. It also has the following properties: ・After a Shunsuiken attack hits an opponent, it will grant Ayato the Namisen effect, increasing the DMG dealt by Shunsuiken based on Ayato's current Max HP. The initial maximum number of Namisen stacks is 4, and 1 stack can be gained through Shunsuiken every 0.1s. This effect will be dispelled when Takimeguri Kanka ends. ・Kamisato Ayato's resistance to interruption is increased. ・Unable to use Charged or Plunging Attacks.
