Introduction

George Strait is an American professional country music singer, songwriter, actor, and music producer with an estimated net worth of $300 Million.

Tapatio Springs Hill

In 2011, Strait and business partner Tom Cusick bought Tapatio Springs Hill Country Golf Resort in Texas after it went into foreclosure. The company that sold it, Textron Financial, had paid $4.5 million at another foreclosure auction the previous year. However, Strait’s purchase was a closed deal, and he only ever hinted that he had paid in the low millions for it.

Six years after the purchase, in November 2017, a fire destroyed the resort’s clubhouse, forcing them to close temporarily. Over the next two years, the property was renovated, including the construction of a new clubhouse and the updating of guest rooms. Finally, the resort reopened in October 2019; however, in 2022, Strait and Cusick sold the hotel to Crescent Hotels & Resorts for an undisclosed amount.

Código 1530 Tequila

One of Strait’s most successful business ventures is Código 1530 Tequila, after investing in the brand in 2017. Strait met the founders, Ron Snyder and Federico Vaughan, while playing golf in Mexico.

At the time, the Tequila was unbranded and just something Ron bought to share with Strait during their golf game. Strait was so impressed, he encouraged them to develop it as a brand for sale in the USA. He not only invested in the company but also appears regularly at marketing events and is very much the face of the brand, with limited-edition bottles selling for around $160 each.

While music and touring still account for most of his wealth, businesses like Código 1530 and Tapatio Springs show how Strait has grown his net worth outside of music.

South Texas Pet Products Lawsuit

In 1998, Strait had partnered with South Texas Pet Products Inc., a company run by businessman Ed D’Avanzo. Strait signed a licensing agreement with D’Avanzo for a product called Strait Nutrition Dog Food, which also featured his image and name. However, just a year later, the venture failed, with D’Avanzo blaming Strait for its demise.

Two years later, in July of 2000, D’Avanzo filed a civil lawsuit against Strait, his production company, and his management team. D’Avanzo sought $2.4 million in damages, claiming that Strait failed to meet with major chains or make in-store appearances. In response, Strait’s legal team stated that the original agreement required only the use of his name and likeness and didn’t require him to make personal appearances. Instead, Strait’s lawyer suggested that the business failed due to poor management decisions and strained relationships with suppliers.

After D’Avanzo’s initial filing, there was no public record of the case’s outcome; therefore, it’s likely that it was settled out of court.
