Georgetown University, formerly known as Georgetown College (1789–1815), is a private federally chartered research institution located on the Potomac River, Washington, D.C., United States. Established by John Carroll on January 23, 1789, the university is best known for its medical and law programs. It is one of the top universities in the country. It is also the oldest Catholic university in the United States. Healy Hall, the flagship building of the main campus of the university designed by Paul J. Pelz, is a National Historic Landmark. Notable alumni of the school include U.S. Presidents, U.S. Supreme Court Justices, foreign heads of state, Fulbright Scholars, Rhodes Scholars, Marshall Scholars, and so on.
