Georgia Lawmakers Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent

Georgia lawmakers have voted 45-6 to put the state on Daylight Saving Time permanently. This has been decided on the final day of this year's legislation, bringing an end to a long-time debate whether to put Georgia in permanent DST or not. Although there's already a final decision based on the state Senate votes, the said change can only occur if Congress makes the yearly tradition nationwide.

The state Senate had passed the legislation last February to put Georgia on standard time throughout the year. However, they voted on Wednesday to favor the Georgia House of Representatives supporting the year-round Daylight Saving Time. Thus, Georgia, will soon stop switching back and forth between the standard and daylight time that happens twice a year.

Sen. Ben Watson, R-Savannah, and Rep. Wes Cantrell, R-Woodstock, have sponsored the competing versions of the bill. They have presented studies stating the adverse effects of switching clocks every year. This included disruptions of sleep patterns and other severe health conditions, affecting people's lives.

Although Georgia lawmakers have chosen permanent Daylight Saving Time, the states' people still need to continue switching back and forth their clocks under the bill, which has gained the final passage unless Congress will take action. They are waiting for Gov. Brian Kemp to sign the legislation.
