Some of the things that make the United States unique is the fact that it is made up of 50 individual States, all with their own laws, widely varying climates, landscapes, and cultures.
All these factors culminate into several interesting facts about Georgia, with one of the more notable ones being that Georgia is home to 159 counties, which is more than any other state east of the Mississippi
Each state has its own nickname usually derived from an event associated with its historical past, a notable landmark within the State, or a cultural icon. Let’s consider Georgia’s nickname.

What is Georgia’s nickname? It is the Peach State.
Georgia, the Peach State, is situated on the South-East coast of America, directly above the state of Florida, and is the largest state east of the iconic Mississippi River. If you are interested in seeing the US state nicknames for all 50 states, including the date each state was entered into the Union, then head over to our page that lists them in alphabetical order.
Georgia’s nickname originates from the early 1900s when the state became one of the biggest peach producers in the United States. By 1928 following the increased railroad lines and the introduction of the refrigerated boxcar, the result in faster shipments pushed Georgia’s peach production to 8 million bushels per year (a bushel can hold up to 8 gallons!).

The Georgia state nickname, unlike most other states, has been given to the state after its official fruit. Most states have a state fruit that is used to represent not only the state’s location, landscape, and climate with regard to what grows there, but also what represents the people and state history the best.
After the U.S. civil war that occurred between 1861-1865, the production of Peach’s saw a meteoric rise when Georgia farmers were seeking cotton alternatives. They were so successful that decades later, people still associated Georgia with Peaches, and even made it the Georgia state nickname!
The Georgia state nickname of the “peach” still exists today despite it no longer being the largest peach producer in the U.S. Georgia is currently 4th out of all U.S. states in peach production, but will still remain the original peach state!
Typically, state’s nicknames or mottos will appear on the state seal, and Georgia is no different, with the state motto of “Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation” making an appearance.
