Glass is not a natural raw material. Glass is created by smelting sand. It can quickly be broken with any tool even your bare hands. It will not yield re-usable glass blocks (unless mined by a tool with the silk touch enchantment. Instead it simply shatters and drops nothing.
torches, redstone (wire), jack-O-lanternss, minecart tracks, doors, pressure plates, beds and ladders cannot be placed on glass. Similarly, mobs are unable to spawn on glass.
Glass Panes
Newly added to Beta 1.8, glass blocks can now be turned into glass panes; you get sixteen panes per six blocks of glass. If you break a glass pane, you can pick it back up and use it again.
