Introduction

Gloria Estefan is a Cuban-American professional singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman with an estimated net worth of $500 Million.

Before Wealth & Fame

Born in Havana, Cuba, Gloria Estefan and her family fled to Miami, Florida, after the Cuban Revolution. Her father had previously been one of Fidel Castro’s soldiers, but later fought against his regime in the Bay of Pigs invasion. He was captured and spent two years as a political prisoner.

Before becoming a famous singer, Estefan worked as a Spanish translator at the Miami International Airport. However, Spanish and English were not the only languages she was fluent in. Gloria was also fluent in French, and at one point, her language skills presented her with an opportunity to work for the CIA. However, she declined, instead pursuing her music career full-time.

Business Ventures

Estefan is no stranger to earning income outside of her music career. She has been involved in several business ventures independently and with her husband. The couple has owned Cuban-themed restaurants, such as Bongos Cuban Café, Estefan Kitchen, and Larios on the Beach, in major cities across the United States. They also own the Costa d’Este Beach Resort & Spa holiday complex in Vero Beach, Florida.

Outside of hospitality, Gloria and her husband were the first Cuban-American couple to own a minority share in the Miami Dolphins NFL team. They purchased their share in June 2009 for an undisclosed amount. Other celebrities, such as Marc Anthony, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams, also bought shares in the team between 2009 and 2010.

An avid writer, Estefan has also published two children’s books: The Magically Mysterious Adventures of Noelle the Bulldog in 2005 and Noelle’s Treasure Tale in 2006. Noelle’s Treasure Tale reached No.3 on the New York Times list of best-selling children’s books. In 2008, she co-authored and published the Cuban-style cookbook Estefan Kitchen with her husband, featuring more than 60 traditional Cuban recipes.

Estefan has also appeared in several films and television shows alongside her entrepreneurial endeavors. Her most notable film appearances include For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story (2000) and Music of the Heart (2009). Her TV appearances include shows like Glee, Jane the Virgin, and One Day at a Time, as well as animated projects like Dora the Explorer. Additionally, Estefan has appeared on TV shows such as American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, The Voice Kids, and The View.

Tour Bus Accident Lawsuit

In 1990, Estefan was involved in a tour bus accident with her husband and 9-year-old son. A tractor-trailer crashed into her tour bus in Pennsylvania while she was sleeping. The accident left her with a broken back and unable to walk. As a result, Estefan and her husband filed a lawsuit against the tractor-trailer company, seeking damages for personal injury, lost opportunity costs, and medical expenses.

Estefan’s lawyers settled the case outside of court in 1991, but the financial details of the settlement remain confidential. Estefan has since raised more than $42 million to help cure Paralysis.

Philanthropy

In 1997, Estefan started The Gloria Estefan Foundation to help promote education, health, and cultural development. The foundation supports itself through public donations and funds from Estefan’s concerts and songs. It focuses on providing grants to individuals with spinal cord injuries, youth and arts programs, and animal shelters.

One of the foundation’s most significant initiatives is helping provide funding for paralysis research through The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. This stems from Estefan’s own experiences with Paralysis. In 1996, Estefan was recognized for her continued humanitarian and philanthropic contributions throughout her career when she received the Billboard Spirit of Hope Award.

Real Estate

In 1993, Gloria and her husband purchased a 1.34-acre gated waterfront compound on the prestigious Star Island in Miami Beach, Florida, for $1.84 million. Celebrities like Shaquille O’Neal and Sean Combs have also had homes on the island. The plot features two properties: the main house, a two-story Venetian-style villa, and a three-bedroom, three-bathroom guesthouse. Gloria’s mother-in-law used the guesthouse, known as Nena’s Villa.

However, after her death, reports suggest that the Estefans rented it for approximately $30,000 a month. The compound has 10 bedrooms, six bathrooms, unobstructed views of Biscayne Bay and downtown Miami, a swimming pool and spa, and a private dock. The couple listed the compound for sale in 2020 for $40 million, reducing it to $29.7 million in May of the same year. It was eventually sold for $35 million in early 2021.
