About Saint Paul

Flag of St. Paul The satellite view shows Saint Paul (abbreviated St. Paul), a friendly Midwestern city, which entitles itself as "the most livable city in America." It is the seat of Ramsey County and since 1849 the capital of Minnesota, a state in the Great Lakes Region of the United States. The city is located on the banks of the Mississippi River in east-central Minnesota. St. Paul's Central Business District is just 12 mi (19 km) away from Downtown Minneapolis. Image: Jon Platek (AlexiusHoratius) The city's foundation at the beginning of the 19th century started with a tavern at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers close to historic Native American settlements. The hamlet soon became a trading and transportation center near Fort Snelling, now the location of Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. St. Paul gained prominence in 1849 when it was named the capital of the Minnesota Territory which later became the State of Minnesota. Minnesota's capital and Minneapolis, the largest city in the state, are known as the "Twin Cities", maybe because the original Twin Cities, Minneapolis on one bank of the Mississippi River, and Saint Anthony on the other side, have merged long time ago to form Minneapolis. Anyway, today Minneapolis and St. Paul are the core cities of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington metropolitan area, which is composed of 182 cities and townships, with a total population of 3.6 million people. St. Paul is Minnesota's second most populous city with a population of 307,000 inhabitants (in 2018).
