About Saint Paul

The satellite view shows Saint Paul (abbreviated St. Paul), a friendly Midwestern city, which entitles itself as "the most livable city in America." It is the seat of Ramsey County and since 1849 the capital of Minnesota, a state in the Great Lakes Region of the United States. The city is located on the banks of the Mississippi River in east-central Minnesota. St. Paul's Central Business District is just 12 mi (19 km) away from Downtown Minneapolis. The hamlet soon became a trading and transportation center near Fort Snelling, now the location of Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. St. Paul gained prominence in 1849 when it was named the capital of the Minnesota Territory which later became the State of Minnesota. Minnesota's capital and Minneapolis, the largest city in the state, are known as the "Twin Cities", maybe because the original Twin Cities, Minneapolis on one bank of the Mississippi River, and Saint Anthony on the other side, have merged long time ago to form Minneapolis. Anyway, today Minneapolis and St. Paul are the core cities of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington metropolitan area, which is composed of 182 cities and townships, with a total population of 3.6 million people. St. Paul is Minnesota's second most populous city with a population of 307,000 inhabitants (in 2018). There are several institutions of higher learning in St. Paul, major facilities are the liberal arts Bethel College (www.bethel.edu) and Concordia University (www.csp.edu), the urban public university of Metropolitan State University (www.metrostate.edu), and the University of Minnesota (www.umn.edu) with major campuses in St. Paul and Minneapolis. James J. Hill House (www.mnhs.org/hillhouse) a mansion from the time of the Gilded Age of "The Empire Builder" was the estate of a railroad magnate, his stately home is now a museum. The center is home to the Minnesota Opera (mnopera.org), the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (www.thespco.org), and the Schubert Club (schubert.org). Fitzgerald Theater (fitzgeraldtheater.publicradio.org) is the oldest active theater in Saint Paul and the home of Live from Here, a variety radio show. Circus Juventas (circusjuventas.org) the youth performing arts circus school offers circus arts training to young people. Churches: Cathedral of Saint Paul is a Classical Revival Roman Catholic cathedral built in 1904. Church of the Assumption is the oldest existing church in Saint Paul, built in 1870. Shopping: Mall of America (mallofamerica.com), a giant 4-level mall with hundreds of stores, many restaurants, a theme park, a cinema, and an aquarium is located in Bloomington, it is the largest mall in the United States in terms of total floor area. Sports: Xcel Energy Center (www.xcelenergycenter.com) "The X" is a multi-purpose arena, home to the NHL's Minnesota Wild. Roy Wilkins Auditorium (www.rivercentre.org/roy-wilkins-auditorium) multi-purpose arena built in 1932, it is part of the RiverCentre complex, hosts the Minnesota RollerGirls roller derby league (www.mnrollergirls.com). Minnesota United FC Stadium (www.mnufc.com/stadium/) a future soccer stadium named Allianz Field.
