The Gooseberry Falls State Park encompasses a total area of 1,687 acres of land on the North Shore of Lake Superior, approximately thirteen miles northeast of Two Harbors city. Access to the park’s main entrance is along the scenic Minnesota Highway 61.
There are several features that make this park an amazing place to visit. First, the park begirds the mouth of the Gooseberry River and is renowned for being the home to the Lower, Middle and Upper Gooseberry Falls. Additionally, this Minnesota state park features several other attractions, including a part of Lake Superior’s shoreline, river gorge, Civilian Conservation Corps log and stone structures, and North Woods wildlife. Some of the animal species the can be found in the park include the black bear, timber wolf, white-tailed deer, and marten. There are also several fish species including trout and salmon that are an angler’s delight as well as birds like ravens, and herring gulls that offer birdwatchers to see these conifer-dependent birds.
This state park has a lot to offer in terms of recreational activities, including lake and river fishing, and nature programs. There are numerous amenities and comforts in the park for visitors to enjoy, including a warming house, drive-in, group and kayak campsites, flush toilets, showers, mountain bike, wheelchair accessible and hiking trails, ski and snowmobile trails, ski and snowshoe rentals, an enclosed picnic shelter, picnic area, and historic structures.
Dogs are allowed into Gooseberry Falls State Park as long as they are leashed and under control, and do not cause any disturbance or destruction to the parks assets, wildlife, habitat, buildings, and other guests.
