Before converting grams to teaspoons, it's essential to keep in mind that grams measure weight and teaspoons measure volume, so the conversion varies depending on the ingredient.
For instance, 10 grams of water will take up less volume in teaspoons than 10 grams of yeast, since it's denser. So, the easiest way to convert grams to teaspoons is to use a converter or a conversion chart.

Steps to Convert Grams to Teaspoons
You can convert grams to teaspoons manually in a few simple steps.
Step One: Find the Ingredient Density
The first step before converting is determine which ingredient you're trying to convert, since each has a different density.
We suggest using a density chart, such as the chart provided by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.[1] For example, active dry yeast has a density of 0.633 g/mL, and table salt has a density of 1.217 g/mL.
Step Two: Use the Grams to Teaspoons Formula
To convert a measurement from grams to teaspoons, divide the weight by the ingredient or material's density. For this to work, the ingredient's density must be in grams per teaspoon (g/tsp).
If the density is given in grams per milliliter (g/mL), first multiply it by 4.9289 to convert to g/tsp.
Therefore, the grams to teaspoons formula given an ingredient density in g/mL is:
teaspoons = grams / 4.9289 × density
The volume in teaspoons is equal to the weight in grams divided by 4.9289 multiplied by the ingredient or substance's density in g/mL.
For example, let's use this formula to see how many teaspoons are in a 7-gram dry yeast packet. Yeast has a density of 0.633 g/mL.
teaspoons = 7 g / 4.9289 × 0.633 g/mL = 2.244 tsp
So, one 7-gram packet of active dry yeast has 2 1/4 teaspoons.
When to Convert Grams to Teaspoons
Grams and teaspoons are both commonly used to measure cooking ingredients.
For cooking applications, most chefs suggest measuring dry ingredients by weight rather than volume to improve accuracy in the measurements.[2] The density of dry ingredients can vary for a variety of reasons, such as compaction and clumping.
The best way to ensure an accurate conversion is to use a scale. When a scale is not available, a calculator like the one above is a good way to estimate the weight to volume conversion.
For cooking and baking ingredients, you can get more specific results using our butter, flour, and sugar conversion calculators.
Another useful application of weight and volume conversions is chemistry. When performing chemical reactions by combining separate chemicals to produce a new chemical, one must know the exact amount of each chemical to add in order to maximize the yield of the reaction.
It is common to mix powdered chemicals with liquid, or aqueous, chemicals, and this is where it becomes very useful to convert between weights and volumes.[3]

What Is a Gram?
A gram is a unit of mass equal to 1/1,000 of a kilogram or 0.035274 ounces, and is equivalent to the mass of one cubic centimeter, or one milliliter, of water.
The gram, or gramme, is an SI unit of mass in the metric system. Grams can be abbreviated as g; for example, 1 gram can be written as 1 g.
A gram is frequently referred to as a unit of weight. While technically, a gram is a measure of mass, and weight is actually a measure of force, the two are equivalent as long as we are performing our calculations on Earth.
For example, an object with a mass of 1 gram weighs 1 gram on Earth, but only weighs one-sixth of that on the moon, yet still has the same mass.

What Is a Teaspoon?
The teaspoon is a unit of volume equal to 1/3 of a tablespoon or 1/6 of a fluid ounce.[4] One teaspoon is equal to approximately 4.929 milliliters, but in nutrition labeling, one teaspoon is equal to exactly 5 milliliters.[5]
The teaspoon is a US customary unit of volume. Teaspoons can be abbreviated as tsp, and are also sometimes abbreviated as t, ts, or tspn. For example, 1 teaspoon can be written as 1 tsp, 1 t, 1 ts, or 1 tspn.
