OK, so we kind of knew it all along, Izzy has issues, medical issues. Finally, last night Denny revealed to her why he came back, although very indirectly. "I'm here for you," he kept telling her. She didn't get it until the end of the episode, when she starts thinking like a doctor. She realizes that he's "here for her," meaning here to take her away to Heaven or Hell, wherever it is she's destined to go. Except Izzy chooses life and Denny goes away. They made it seem like instead of some apparition from her own mind, Denny was a kind of angel sent to take her away. So, I guess he was a ghost after all, or something like that. Now, we just have to find out what exactly is wrong with Izzy, although all signs point to her brain. This may have been one of the saddest Grey's episodes ever. There wasn't much humor mixed in aside from Lexie breaking Mark's little Mark (did we even know that was possible)? Callie and Owen help fix it and Sadie stands up and tells everyone she was the one who caused the incident. The whole episode pretty much revolved around the notions of Heaven and Hell, with Denny wondering which one he was in, Izzy now realizing that she may be in Hell, a little boy dying and Meredith's patient being executed. Where are they all going? That, we'll never know. Meredith is still trying to save Jackson by letting the serial killer die. She tells Bailey her plan, but she wants none of it. Then Christina finds out and the serial killer decides he wants to live. Derek is paged and they take him to surgery to repair his brain. In the middle of surgery, Bailey enters and tells Derek to stop. She needs his organs, she says, and Derek stops, although he gives her a speech about being an executioner or a doctor. After recovering her wits, Bailey tells him to proceed and realizes that she just crossed a line.
Meanwhile, the chief is crossing his own lines, asking a woman whose husband is on life support for his organs. He gives her a speech about how your organs don't go with you to Heaven and she eventually gives in. It's almost too late, though, Jackson is dying, his mother has told him it's ok to go. They revive the little boy and do the surgery, and at the end we see him wake up. The serial killer also survives, at least for a few more days. Meredith goes to his execution to offer him some compassion -- and because he asked her -- and can't stop crying after. Derek picks her up and takes her to Christina, so it seems like their friendship may be mended now. It was a pretty deep episode with a lot to think about. But honestly, I'm going to try not to. Hopefully, next week will be a bit lighter with some of the funnier antics that were missing from the last two episodes.
