What ingredients do you need to make a grilled cabbage steak?
  • Head of cabbage – you’ll cut this into thick sections (steaks), depending on the size of your head of cabbage you’ll get 4-6 ‘steaks’
  • EVOO – a good quality extra virgin olive oil makes all the difference
  • Everything Bagel seasoning – this seasoning makes everything better!
That’s it – only 3 ingredients and a bit of time on the grill and you’re on your way to an amazing dinner or side dish. And, since it has less than 5 ingredients, it’s perfect for this weeks’ Five Ingredient Friday!4 raw cabbage steaks

Cabbage isn’t exactly a star vegetable in our house. Sure, we’d occasionally make coleslaw or the occasional cabbage roll, but that was about it… until one afternoon when my husband was doing some grilling meal prep. I spotted a little head of cabbage from our Misfits Market imperfect produce box and thought—why not toss it on the grill?

I love experimenting with new foods, especially on the grill. But this one? Holy cow. I didn’t expect it to be this good. The charred edges, the tender middle, the bold flavor from the seasoning—it’s a total game-changer. We’ve been making it all summer long and now it’s a surprisingly requested side dish around here.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Just 3 ingredients—great for Five Ingredient Fridays

  • Surprisingly delicious (even for cabbage skeptics)

  • Pairs well with grilled meat, fish, or grain bowls

  • Vegan, gluten-free, and budget-friendly

Tips for Success

  • Use a sharp knife to get even slices.

  • Keep the grill medium—this allows the cabbage to soften without burning the outside too quickly.

  • A metal spatula helps flip the cabbage steaks without them falling apart.

  • Want to amp it up? Add a drizzle of balsamic glaze or crumbled feta before serving.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these alongside grilled chicken, burgers, steak, or fish—or make them the star of a veggie-packed plate. They’re hearty enough to stand on their own and flavorful enough to convert even the most skeptical veggie eater.

It’s always a win when a simple recipe turns into a summer staple—and these grilled cabbage steaks did exactly that. What started as a little experiment with a leftover produce box find has become one of our favorite side dishes. If you’ve never grilled cabbage before, now’s the time. Who knows—it might just become a surprise hit in your house too!Grilled cabbage steak on blue plate
