Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil predicts more winter

Groundhog Day marks the moment Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his annual hibernation to predict either an early spring or another six weeks of winter. The quirky festival has been held every year on February 2 since 1887 in Punxsutawney, United States. The custom was brought to the US by German immigrants arriving in Pennsylvania in the 17th and 18th century. Long popular with locals, Groundhog Day drew worldwide attention in 1993 with the release of a film with the same name.

Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, focuses on the town’s festivities as a backdrop to the leading characters’ love story.

Despite being filmed in Illinois, the movie propelled Punxsutawney into the spotlight as people clambered to learn more about the cultural tradition.

According to folklore, groundhog Phil lives in his tiny hill in Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney where he emerges from his deep sleep every year.

Punxsutawney is a town with a population of just under 6,000 people in Jefferson County, about one and a half hours northeast of Pittsburgh.

The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club website refers to the area as a “quintessential Pennsylvania small town” which is “surrounded by natural beauty and resources”.

The festival takes place in Barclay Square in the downtown area, home to late Victorian and Romanesque Revival architecture.

Live coverage of Groundhog Day will be streamed from 2.30am EST (7.30am GMT) until 4pm (9pm GMT) on Saturday, February 2.

An exact time of when Phil will emerge from his hole has not been given but it usually coincides with sunrise.

Today sunrise happens at 7.26am (EST) (12.30pm GMT).

Legend has it that should Phil see his shadow on the morning due to clear skies there will be another six weeks of winter ahead.

But grey clouds mean spring has officially sprung.

Phil is not able to say his answer out loud but must relay it to a member of the Groundhog Day Club's inner circle.

They are supposedly the only people who can understand what he says.

Phil has a notoriously low record of getting his predictions right with less than 20 percent success in the last few years.
