What is gum peeling?

Gum peeling is a treatment that uses lasers and chemicals to restore your gums to their original beautiful pink color.

The causes of darkened gums include smoking, overly forceful tooth brushing, and mouth breathing habits. These can cause darkened gums by depositing melanin pigments.

Chemical gum peeling

Chemical gum peeling is a method of removing melanin pigment deposited along with the skin’s surface tissue by applying a chemical called phenol agent to the gums, which causes protein denaturation.

Flow of Chemical Gum Peeling

1. Cleaning and disinfection of the gums

Remove stains and disinfect your gums.

2. Surface anesthesia

Apply anesthesia to the gums as the phenolics can be stimulus.

3. Application of phenolic agents

Apply the phenolic agent to the pigmented areas of the gums.

4. Neutralization by alcohol agent

An alcohol agent is applied to the cloudy areas to neutralize the phenolic agent.

5. Washing in water

Finish it off with a rinse.

Notes and Frequently Asked Questions

Q：Can everyone get a chemical gum peel?

A：If you are allergic to the chemicals used for gum peeling (i.e., phenolics and alcohol), you are not eligible for this treatment.

Q：Can I get the treatment while I am pregnant?

A：Though it is unlikely to affect you during pregnancy, treatment after delivery is recommended as there are no proven data.

Q：How many times do I need to be treated?

A：Most patients need only one treatment, but if the melanin pigmentation is severe, multiple treatments may be required.

Q：Will there be pain during the treatment?

A：A surface anesthesia will be administered, but you may feel tingling pain depending on the individual.

Discomfort may persist after the procedure.

Q：Will the effect be immediate?

A：The gums usually clear up in 1 to 2 weeks.

A white film will form on the gums after the procedure and it will begin to peel off naturally in 3 to 4 days. Please do not remove it yourself.

Q：Is there anything I should pay attention to after the treatment?

A：Avoid strong stimulation like spicy or salty food, and smoking.

If you smoke, there is a possibility of repigmentation. Also, brushing gums directly may cause bleeding, so please be mindful when you brush your teeth.

Pigmentation by metals

In some dental procedures, metal is used for dental implants and fillings. These metals may melt away over time, causing discoloration of the gums. Such pigmentation cannot be removed by gum peels. Metal-free treatment can prevent discoloration and other problems by avoiding the use of metals that can cause pigmentation.
