  • Gun Permit for information about handgun licenses and rifle or shotgun permits

If you are traveling to New York City and you plan to bring a firearm, you should check local, state, and federal laws before you go.

There are laws for firearms that regulate:

  • Buying
  • Selling
  • Owning
  • Using
  • Carrying in public

These laws include New York State's Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act.

There are limited exceptions to the rules, including for some military personnel or police officers on official duty.

New York City has its own rules for purchasing and carrying firearms. To own a handgun, you need a valid City handgun license. To own a rifle or shotgun, you need a City-issued permit. Learn more about firearm permits on the Gun Permit page.

You can get more information online and by phone.
