The Goop Lab: Gwyneth Paltrow stars in new Netflix series

The Goop Lab with Gwyneth Paltrow premieres this Friday (January 24) on Netflix worldwide. For the first time, viewers will be granted behind the scene access to the workings of Paltrow’s lifestyle company, Goop.

What does GOOP stand for?

In 2008, Oscar-winning actress founded the wellness and lifestyle company Goop.

Speaking to USA Today, Paltrow explained the meaning behind GOOP and revealed it does not stand for anything in particular.

The first and last initials come from her own name and she told the New York Times, that someone told her successful internet companies to have double o’s in their names.

Paltrow told USA Today: “It is a nickname, like my name is GP, so that is really where it came from.

“And I wanted it to be a word that means nothing and could mean anything.”

Paltrow also opened up about her inspiration behind GOOP.

She said: “I have this incredible, blessed, sometimes difficult, very lucky, very unique life, and I’ve gotten to travel all over the place and to work and live in different cities. …

“I go on tour with my husband [Chris Martin, now ex-husband] and go to cities I would never necessarily go to.

“So I started accruing all of this information. I am the person my friends call when they want to know: ‘I am redoing this bathroom, and I want a sink that looks midcentury, but a contemporary version of a midcentury. Where should I go?’ or ‘How do I make your (recipes)?” …

“I thought this would be a fun, creative way to share with friends.

“I never really knew where I wanted it to go when I was starting it.

“I just thought if I could affect one woman’s life positively who was trying to do all the things I was doing, and I had one solution that worked for me that might work for her, it was worth it to try and share it.”

Goop began as a weekly newsletter, which provided lifestyle advice for women, alongside dietary tips and self-care.

Soon afterwards, Paltrow founded GOOP.com, before expanding into a store.

Goop sells products such as makeup, skincare, perform, vitamins and treatments.

The brand also has its own clothing line, a perfume collection and furniture and home decor line.

Paltrow has also setup Goop pop-up shops, a print magazine and a podcast.

On 2017, Goop hosted a ‘wellness summit’ costing $500 per ticket.

Now, people across the world can learn more about the crazy world of Goop on Netflix.

The docuseries, The Goop Lab, premieres Friday, January 24 on Netflix worldwide.

There are six episodes in the series, with each episode focused on individual Goop treatments and practices.

Some of these practices include psychedelic drugs, exorcisms, cold therapy, anti-ageing and female sexuality.

The synopsis for Paltrow’s docuseries simply reads: “A curiosity-driven exploration of boundary-pushing wellness topics — brought to you by Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle site, goop.”
