Hades: How To Unlock Hades Erebus Chambers (& What They're For)

Hades, the action roguelike from Supergiant Games is a lot of fun, and exceedingly difficult. The game features Zagreus, the Prince of the Underworld, attempting to escape to the surface, and probably failing to do so his first several times. He does find things that will help make him stronger that persist between playthroughs, and he meets all manner of characters from Greek Mythology. Some are helpful, some can even be romanced, and some are giant jerks.

Eventually though, after multiple attempts, Zagreus finally manages to make it to the surface. Soon enough though, he returns to the House of Hades to begin again. Here is where the real challenges lie, because now the player has the option to increase the difficulty for more rewards through the Pact of Punishment, and can also unlock Infernal Gates, which lead to the Erebus Chambers.
Unlocking Erebus Chambers in Hades
The Infernal Gates behave in a similar way to the gates which lead to Chaos. They will randomly show up in a run, and there is a cost to entering them. First, they must be unlocked.
The first requirement to unlock the Infernal Gates is to beat the final boss. After that, they can purchase the “Contractor’s Desk, Deluxe” Underworld Renovation for two diamonds. Once that has been done, they can purchase the “Alternate Exits” Underworld Renovation for an additional two diamonds. Now the Infernal Gates will show up. It costs Heat to enter, which can be gained from undertaking Pact of Punishment challenges. It is five Heat for gates in Tartarus, ten Heat in Asphodel, and fifteen Heat in Elysium. Once the Heat has been paid, the Infernal Gate will open.
Infernal Gates lead to Erebus. In Greek mythology, Erebus was sometimes a primordial god, sometimes a place (depending on the source). In the context of Hades, the Erebus Chambers are a location where the challenge is to defeat all the enemies without being hit. It’s a difficult prospect to be sure and is probably easier to accomplish with ranged weapons. Being able to stay at range means the player has an advantage against melee enemies and has a little more time to react to the projectiles for ranged enemies. If the player does get hit, the reward is a Red Onion which heals only 1 health, and Hades will mock Zagreus. As if he doesn’t do that enough anyway.
Why would anyone want to subject themselves to this tough ordeal? Some people really enjoy a challenge, but it can lead to some significant rewards. In addition, players always have three exits to choose from, meaning they are more likely to get the reward they want in the next chamber. By comparison, Chaos Gates only offer three exits sometimes.
