How to cut bangs like a professional 1. Separate your fringe section
Start by parting your hair in a middle part, take a triangular section at the front, and then tie the rest of your hair away, so you don't cut the wrong pieces.
How much hair you take will vary depending on how much hair you have and how much hair you're going to want in your curtain bangs. I have pretty fine hair, so I'm going to take quite a large section because if I take too little, it's not going to sit nicely on my face; it's just going to be wispy and blend in with the rest of my hair.
I want my curtain bangs to be noticeable. So. I take the point that connects with my middle part and I section a straight line out to my temple area on both sides. Make sure that you are even on both sides of your triangular parting.
Wetting hair, ready to cut it 2. Wet your hair
Now you're going to grab that fringe and wet it down because it's way easier to work with wet hair. With dry hair, you get bumps, cowlicks, and movement. Cutting on wet hair will give you a much cleaner line, and it will look a lot better in the end.
How to cut curtain bangs on yourself 3. Cut
Comb your bangs all the way down, then start cutting right under your nose. You don't want the curtain bangs to be too short; you want them grazing the cheekbone area.
I'm going to split my bangs in half to have more control over what I'm doing. Hold your fingers parallel to the floor to cut. Using that first section as a guide, you're going to cut the second section to exactly the same length. Grab both sides to see if they're even.
How to bevel hair 4. Bevel
If we were to leave the curtain bangs here and just spread them, they would be boxy and chunky, and not cute, so we need to add some layering and bevel.
Slip your hair into that middle part, grab the section on the left, and over-direct it to your right-hand side, keeping your fingers parallel to the triangular parting. Then you want to cut off the little ledge, as shown in the picture.
Move that section out the way and now do the same with the other side. Once done, put everything back into the middle to see that you are even. The two sides should look symmetrical. If it's not even, you can softy point cut to even it out.
How to style curtain bangs 5. Blow-dry
When it comes to blow-drying your bangs, a lot of people blow-dry them forward. I find that if I do this, they will sit right in front of my eyes, and they're too long for that.
So, what I like to do is blow-dry them backward. This way, it will give my hair this lift and instant swoop which is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm using my Blowbrusher brush to do this.
How to cut curtain bangs at home 6. Point cut
I'm finding that the curtain bangs are still looking a bit too chunky and thick, so I'm going to point cut them. To do this, over-direct the hair all the way up, then go in with your scissors and very carefully soften out the line.
Make sure you're angling the scissors so that they go right into the hair and not to the side. If you go in from the side, you're going to chip away length, and you just want to chip away density.
You can then straighten them if you want. I don't like to because I like to have some lift in the bangs, and I like the movement that a blow-dry provides.
