Half Past an Hour

The hour hand takes one hour to move from one number to the next number. If it has gone from the number 1 to the number 2, it means one hour has passed.

The minute hand moves faster and it takes one hour to go around the clock. If it starts at 12 and goes around to get back to 12, it also means one hour has passed.

We learnt that, one hour is equal to 60 minutes. When one hour is divided into two, it is half an hour or 30 minutes. The minute hand points at 6. We say, 30 minutes past an hour or half past an hour.

Look at the clock. The minute hand is at 6. The hour hand is between 1 and 2. So, the time is half past 1. We write 1:30.

Here, the minute hand is at 6. The hour hand is between 3 and 4. So, the time is half past 3.We write 3:30.

Here, also the minute hand is at 6. The hour hand is between 7 and 8. So, the time is half past 7. We write 7:30.

Here, also the minute hand is at 6. The hour hand is between 10 and 11. So, the time is half past 10. We write 10:30.

In the clock shown on the left, the minute hand is pointing to 6 and the hour hand is between 2 and 3.We say that the time is half past two or two thirty. In short form, we write it as 2:30.

In the clock shown on the right, minute hand is pointing to 6 and the hour hand is between 5 and 6. We say that the time is half past 5 or five thirty or 5:30.

Note: When the minute hand goes from 12 to 6, we say that half an hour has passed.

1. What is Half Past of an Hour?

Answer:

We know that 1 hour = 60 minutes

So, half an hour = half of 60 minutes = 30 minutes

In one hour, the minute hand moves once around the clock. In half an hour, the minute hand completes half round on the clock. When the minute hand reaches from 12 to 6, we say it is 'half past the hour'.
