Halloween Kills: Is It Even Possible To Kill Michael Myers? - CBR

Halloween Kills brings plenty of fresh scares and shocking surprises to the venerable slasher franchise, including some major insinuations about its masked serial killer Michael Myers. While original survivor Tommy Doyle rounded up an entire ensemble of Haddonfield residents to serve as a makeshift posse to track down and kill the Shape for good, the slasher endured everything from shootings, stabbings and being bludgeoned, only to shrug it all off and massacre those that stood against him. The film's closing monologue by Laurie Strode suggests that the Shape has truly become something of a malevolent supernatural entity, something previous Halloween movies touched on. And with these shocking developments and the Shape still very much on the loose by the end of Halloween Kills, the mystery of whether Michael Myers is even killable becomes more prominent.

Halloween Kills closes with Laurie claiming that the Shape is something that grows stronger, not only by every murder he makes as he cuts a fresh path across Haddonfield but by the strife festering throughout his hometown. Given the violence and chaos that Tommy fostered as he gathered his mob to confront Myers, this suggests that the Shape is more powerful than ever, with Laurie observing that the slasher cannot be destroyed by conventional, physical means. And without divulging specifics, Laurie implies that only she is capable of destroying Myers for good, effectively setting the stage for next year's Halloween Ends.

It's important to note that, however, that while Shape is drawing upon the unholy ability to withstand all manner of attacks that would kill lesser individuals, he can still apparently feel pain and be immobilized for a time. Audible grunts of pain are uttered whenever the Shape endures an attack and Tommy and Karen's attack had left the Shape on the ground before he rose to kill those gathered against him, seemingly more lethally efficient than ever. Laurie had a much more definitive strategy planned to eliminate the Shape in the 2018 Halloween revival film, and one that may tie into a revelation about Myers in Halloween Kills.

Halloween Kills reveals the Shape wasn't interested in directly hunting Laurie at all but rather to return to his childhood home and stare out his murdered sister Judith's window as he had after killing her in 1963 and after his bloody rampage in 1978. Other characters appear mesmerized by the window, including a deputy the Shape attacked in 1978 and Karen moments before the Shape murdered her in 2018. Between this and Laurie's strategy to burn Myers to a crisp in her booby-trapped home, perhaps an inferno may be the right way to go in destroying the Shape, albeit inside of his own home instead.

Fire has seemingly been an effective weapon in destroying the Shape before, with 1981's now non-canonical Halloween II ending with Laurie and Doctor Loomis incinerating Myers at Haddonfield Memorial Hospital. 1988's Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers retconned this as having only placed Myers in a lengthy com, but fire may once again be the way to go, with Laurie as the counterpoint to the Shape's murderous fury. But regardless of whatever strategy Laurie develops to destroy her nemesis, her inevitable showdown with Shape is sure to be a brutal one.
