6. Dobby's Death (The Deathly Hallows)

In The Book: Dobby dies at Shell Cottage after Bellatrix's knife catches him mid-disapparation.

In The Film: Besides Dobby's dying words, the scene plays out in virtually the same way.

Summary: Now, I know what you're thinking. You're wondering what a scene that is basically the same in both versions is doing on a '10 Scenes in Harry Potter that are completely different in the books' list. Allow me to explain. The book version of Dobby's death more accurately conveys Harry's overwhelming sense of desperation as he watches Dobby die, and JK Rowling has the added benefit of being able to explain what is happening during the disapparation itself. But the book version of Dobby's death wins based on context.

Dobby appears in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh books; he gets more of a backstory and helps Harry out of some tight situations. By Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Dobby hadn't appeared in the films since Chamber of Secrets, and so his death, while still horribly sad, does not have quite the same impact.
