Harry Potter: Why Hagrid Should've Been A Hufflepuff - CBR

In the Harry Potter universe, fans would be hard-pressed to find a more loving and gentle character than Rubeus Hagrid. In the books and films, Hagrid is the one who takes Harry to the Dursleys and also ferries him off to Hogwarts. He essentially becomes a surrogate caretaker to him and never leaves his side through all of the young boy's hardships. Even so, much of his past is left hidden in the cracks of the lore -- although at the very least, his Hogwarts house has been confirmed in an interview with JK Rowling to be Gryffindor. However, when looking back on his personality and actions, it's clear that he is much more of a Hufflepuff.

The Hufflepuff house is named after its founder, Helga Hufflepuff, and prides itself on the traits of inclusiveness and loyalty. However, Hufflepuffs are also hard-working, dedicated, patient and fair. One of the most famous Hufflepuffs to come out of Hogwarts was actually Newt Scamander, the famed writer of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Comparatively, they are nothing like those from the Gryffindor house, who are often known to be fiery in personality with an occasional short temper. They are also chivalrous, brave and daring to the point of recklessness.

While Hagrid is far from daring, he is incredibly brave and acts as the school's groundskeeper. This often puts him in contact with multiple dangerous creatures from the Forbidden Forest, including the massive Acromantula Aragog, who sees Hagrid as a friend. Hagrid is also very chivalrous when he gets over his nerves while talking to his girlfriend, Madame Olympe Maxime. However, what truly separates him from his Gryffindor house is his lack of recklessness. Hagrid isn't keen on taking risks when he doesn't need to and will do his best to try and avoid situations that could get him into trouble (although he often speaks too much to Harry and his friends, letting them in on secrets he isn't supposed to tell anyone). In reality, the most prominent traits that supposedly mark him as a Gryffindor are more akin to a Hufflepuff.

On the surface, Hagrid likes to keep to himself, much like other Hufflepuffs. He even has his own hut on the outskirts of the school's grounds that he calls his home. There, he can nurture and care for any creatures that may cross his path, which ties perfectly into his incredible amount of patience. Whether dealing with children or the three-headed dog Fluffy, he has an unwavering amount of patience that isn't easily broken.

Hagrid is also very fair, as he doesn't play favorites with students (although he does with houses, as he's a staunch Gryffindor fan). While he has a soft spot for Harry and his friends, he isn't afraid to make them work along with Malfoy in the Forbidden Forest when they get in trouble. However, perhaps his most defining feature is his loyalty. For decades, Hagrid remains loyal to Dumbledore, even being trusted with taking care of Harry when the time comes. As a result, he is also loyal to his young friend, always there to help him through thick and thin.

While Hagrid never shies away from displaying his bias toward Gryffindor, he would have made an excellent Hufflepuff. His loyal characteristics and patience with children and animals would have also painted the house in a much more positive light. Given that they are the second-largest house to stay and fight in the Battle of Hogwarts, it's a shame they didn't get more attention until Newt Scamander gained more popularity. Furthermore, Hagrid could have helped set up Hufflepuff's natural inclination for nature thanks to how much he cares for so many animals. In other words, while Hagrid is technically a Gryffindor, he can't hide the Hufflepuff hiding just below the surface.
