Hatpins hold a special intrigue for me, whether it is the beauty, the function or the danger, I cannot say. In this workshop you will learn to make several types of hatpins, hear about the history of hatpins and finally put them into practice. You will have the chance to practice with pins and hats, learning how to use them and some tips on hair styles. Finally, bring some of your favourite hatpins to show and share.

Enjoy a mix of functional & fanciful to share information and techniques on hatpins. Students will leave with several custom made, functional hatpins.

Suitable for adults of all skill levels.

This workshop is the result of research, experimentation and interviews. Learn some history while making a set of hatpins for yourself. Then learn some hairstyling tips, from a professional hair stylist, for hatpin wearers and how to secure a hat. Practice using a variety of hat pin lengths on a selection of hats. Finally, bring some of your own favourite hat pins to show and share.

You will go away loads of hat pin information as well as several of your own new hat pins using a variety of techniques including:

Coordinating pin – fabric covered pin like the pins in Aage Thaarup’s pink hat in the Victoria & Albert (V&A) collection

Statement pin – covered in sequins or cord, inspired by a vintage pin I found in Hastings.

Beaded pin – to coordinate or make a statement. I will teach some great maker tips and time permitting, you will also get to try your hand at the monkey fist knot.
