All hay prices quoted are dollars per ton FOB point of origin for alfalfa hay unless otherwise noted.

The information presented in this report is compiled from public and private quality tested sales and reports in the Midwest.

Previous hay reports can be viewed on the archive.

Hay auction data is collected on the first and third week of the month and posted by or before Tuesday. Prices quoted in this report are for “as fed” alfalfa hay.

Demand and Sales Comments

Prices have remained fairly steady with some limited downward pressure. Dairy quality hay is in demand and is supporting the current prices and lower quality hay is discounted. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices are steady to strong. Small square bales averaged $4.70 a bale (range of $3.00 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $42.00 per bale (a range of $25.00 to $65.00). Large round bale straw averaged $46.00 per bale (range of $39.00 – $64.00).

In Nebraska, hay sold steady with slow movement of hay. Drought is a concern, and many are holding hay stocks.  In Iowa, no report.

In South Dakota, all classes of hay had steady with good demand. Hay supplies are limited, but weather has helped reduce hay requirement.

In Missouri, hay supply is moderate and demand is light to moderate with prices mostly steady. Small orders are currently the most common.

In Southwest Minnesota, no report. In Kansas, hay market prices remain steady, movement remains slow. There are worries of drought, but with an open winter some have stocks of hay to sell.

 In Wisconsin, prices were weaker this week in the market.
