Users of the HBO Max app on Apple TV have been encountering a problem where the app always display subtitles (captioning) even after they are disabled in the settings.

In this post, we cover how to fix this problem and make it where subtitles work as intended.

To fix this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Use a web browser on your phone or computer to login to your account at the HBO Max website.
  2. Start playing any show or movie.
  3. Move the mouse anywhere on the movie, then select the voice cloud icon.
  4. Set “Subtitles” to “Off“. HBO Max Turn Off Subtitles

Now when you use the HBO Max app on your streaming device, the subtitles will be off.

There must be some place where HBO Max stores information about subtitles and previous sessions and gets confused about whether they are supposed to be on or off.

  1. I love HBO Max, but I always have to turn on subtitles to watch it. This is really annoying. Can you fix this?
