Heathenry For Beginners - Modern Norse Heathen

I’ve had a few people asking recently for more beginner-friendly posts, so I thought I’d dedicate this article to those who may be new to heathenry!
What does it mean to be heathen?
‘Heathen’ was once a derogatory term, coined by the Christians to describe anyone who did not believe in their god. Now, however, it is a term widely used to describe followers of Asatru.
What is Asatru?
‘Asatru’ is made up of two words – ‘Asa’ (referring to the gods/goddesses of the Aesir and Vanir), and ‘Tru’ (meaning ‘faith’. Literally translated, Asatru means ‘faith in the gods’. It is a modern form of Norse paganism which has become hugely popular in the last decade or so.
How is being heathen different from being pagan?
Although both are very similar, whereas pagans tend to be more focused on rituals and solar/lunar cycles, heathens prefer to connect with their ancestors as well as nature. Heathens are very aware of the generations who went before them, and who led to their existence; as a result of this, they try hard to continue the old ways of yesteryear. Ultimately though, there are only small, subtle differences between heathens and pagans.
Who can be heathen?
Originally, as with Norse paganism, heathenry was more often practised by those of European (specifically Germanic) heritage. Nowadays, it is acceptable for anyone to join our ranks, although it is a sad fact that many racists and white supremecists taint our faith by claiming to be followers of it. However, the majority of us are very tolerant, and believe that anyone can be a part of Asatru if they believe.
What qualities do I need to possess in order to become heathen?
To be heathen, you need to have courage. You need to be strong-willed and able to stand up for what you believe in. You should try to honour your ancestors in everything you do, and have a strong connection with nature.
How can I learn more?
There are several books written about the subjects of Asatru and heathenry, which can be found listed elsewhere on this blog (please check my previous posts). You could also join relevant groups on Facebook, or contact your country’s Asatru organisation. But be aware, as I said before, there are many people who use our faith as an excuse to spread their racist bile – choose these groups carefully!
Feel free to contact me if you want to learn more. I hope this helps!
