"Heather" is a song by American singer-songwriter Conan Gray. It was released on March 20, 2020, serving as the tenth track on the artist's debut studio album, Kid Krow. It became a single on September 4, 2020 after its major rise in popularity.

Background[]

The song is about unrequited love. The song talks about Conan being in love with someone who is in love with Heather. He talks about frustration and jealously and how he has a love/hate relationship with Heather, wanting to be her.

“	‘Heather’ is the song on the album that I always cry to. I think it’s the most honest recount of my love life at the moment. It’s about a girl named Heather—I think everyone has a Heather in their life. The person that I really, really liked was in love with Heather. They were not in love with me, and because of that, I f**king hated Heather. I hated Heather with all of my heart and soul. I had no reason to hate Heather. Heather is a perfectly nice girl. She’s sweet and she’s pure and she smells like daisies—she’s perfect, but I hate her. It’s this humiliating thing to admit, but it’s just true. I’m scared to see how people are going to react, because it isn’t a good thing to think something like that, but I also think it’s something that I’ve never really heard anyone admit. Gray stated it was written at the end of making Kid Krow. It was his favorite song, and wanted it as a single, but couldn't due to how late it was in the process.[2]

Release[]

This track became a sleeper hit as it gathered a huge amount of attention on TikTok, and eventually became one of the app's classic audios. On July 15, 2020 Gray posted an acoustic version of "Heather", followed by the now iconic picture of Conan in a skirt.[3][4]

The music video was announced on August 19 and released in the following day.[5] The song itself would be released as a 7" single on September 4 with an exclusive cover art accompanying it.

Later, on December 3, 2020 Conan launched a website that would randomly generate a small blurb about the person and relate it to "Heather". The site has been closed for a long time now and is unusable.

Music video[]

The music video for "Heather" was entirely shot in Gray's apartment. It features close up's at Conan waking up, showering and putting on clothes. The clip culminates in Gray taking the aforementioned picture of him in a skirt, and then showing the Instagram post afterwards.

The clip is currently Conan's most viewed video on his YouTube channel, gathering 163 million views as of 2024.[6] Its lyric video is the second most viewed with 124 million views.[7]

Sweaters[]

"Heather" spawned a major online trend, titled "Heather Day", which is annually celebrated by users, including Gray's fans, by gifting their loved ones a sweater on each December 3. Gray himself has contributed to it by releasing limited sweaters on each anniversary.

Lost Verse Version (Live)[]

"Heather (Lost Verse Version) [Live]" is a live recording of the track, captured during 2024's Found Heaven On Tour, and initially released as a 7" vinyl on November 25, 2024, but re-released on March 20, 2025 through streaming services as a part of the Kid Krow, Decomposed anniversary reissue.

The performance includes an additional, previously scrapped third verse before the song's final chorus. Gray originally revealed the unreleased portion of the track on the third Heather Day in 2023, adding it was intended to be the original second verse, before being completely re-written.[8]
