INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) has announced that drivers will be temporarily reassigned to Heavy Trash service routes to supplement staff shortages currently experienced by Indy DPW’s solid waste division. Recent staffing issues in Marion County solid waste districts serviced by Indy DPW have led to the prioritization of standard trash cart service over Heavy Trash service in previous weeks and the occasional suspension of some Heavy Trash routes. Indy DPW will reassign approximately 10 drivers from other operations teams to support Heavy Trash service as work continues to stabilize staffing issues. Marion County residents planning to dispose of Heavy Trash items (such as yard waste, certain appliances, or mattresses) in solid waste districts served by Indy DPW should prepare for Heavy Trash service on their regularly scheduled Heavy Trash service day. Locations in districts served by Indy DPW are assigned a designated day and week of each month for service, i.e. the third Wednesday of the month. Heavy Trash items missed during suspended service in previous weeks will be collected on the standard, designated Heavy Trash service day in the month of May. Residents can find which day of the month is their Heavy Trash service day via this online portal, or by calling the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622. Residents living in solid waste districts served by Republic Services or Waste Management can also see information about their Heavy Trash routes using these methods, though these Heavy Trash routes have not been impacted by recent staffing issues at Indy DPW.
