Henry Cavill will play Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of a series of best-selling Polish fantasy books by Andrzej Sapkowski. The 36-year-old Brit admitted to becoming a fan of the video game series The Witcher, also based on the books, the latest instalment of which won several industry awards.

How tall is Henry Cavill?

The Superman star measures 6ft 1in (1.84 m) and was once in line to play James Bond in Casino Royale.

In 2013, he was named World’s Sexiest Man by British Glamour magazine later placing third in Empire’s 100 Sexiest Movie Stars list.

Cavill’s next film – Enola Holmes – comes out in 2020 and the 36-year-old will play the role of Sherlock Holmes.

Who is Henry Cavill in The Witcher?

In the upcoming Netflix series, Cavill plays Geralt, a solitary monster hunter struggling to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.

Destiny then hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress and a young princess with a dangerous secret.

Together the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent.

Cavill said: “I’ve been prepping for this character unintentionally for my whole life.

“And then when playing the games and imagining how to make it into a TV show or a movie… you have a very close connection after playing the computer game of the character.

“Especially after you’ve played 200-plus hours of it.”

The Jersey-born actor added: “I’ve been a fan of the fantasy genre since I was a boy – it’s kind of the stuff I really, really love. In my free time, it’s what I read.

“So when I heard they were making this into a TV show, I was banging the door down to try and get involved.”

According to The Witcher’s showrunner Lauren Schmidt, Cavill’s agents called Netflix every other day in a bid to secure the role.

Starring alongside Cavill will be Anya Chalotra (The ABC Murders, Wanderlust) as Yennefer and Freya Allan (The War of the Worlds, Into The Badlands) as Ciri.

Other cast members include Jodhi May of Game of Thrones fame as Calanthe, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson from Fortitude as Eist, Knightfall’s Adam Levy as Mousesack and MyAnna Buring from Ripper Street as Tissaia.

All eight episodes of the series will drop in one go for audiences to binge-watch.

Cavill was born in St Helier in Jersey and has four siblings.

In 2014 he won the Best Hero gong at the MTV Movie Awards for his role as Superman in Man of Steel.
