Convicted Murderer. He is one of the most prolific convicted murderers in the United States with him confessing to at least 27 killings. Born Herman Webster Mudgett, he used the alias of Henry Howard Holmes. He studied medicine and worked as a druggist in Chicago. During the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, he was the proprietor of the infamous "Murder Castle", which had hidden rooms, concealed stairways, trap doors, false walls, chutes, an elevator with no shaft and an elevator shaft with no elevator. After running a help-wanted ad in Chicago newspapers for a secretary, he would employ the young single lady. Over time his would develop a romantic relationship with her with promises of marriage and have her make him beneficiary of her life insurance policy. While she was sleeping, he then would chloroform her, then torture her in his sound proof room, and eventually gassed her to death. He repeated the scenario over and over, killing numerous women. Leaving Chicago, he relocated first to Fort Worth, Texas and then to Philadelphia where he devised an insurance scam using a family named Pitezel as accomplices. He killed Benjamin Pitezel, the head of the family, with poison, and he along with Pitezel's wife claimed the insurance monies. He killed the Pitezel children by gassing Pitezel's two daughters, Alice and Nellie, in a trunk and somehow killing Pitezel's young son, Howard, whose charred skull was found in a stove. After getting a tip from a prison acquaintance of his advising them of the insurance scam, the insurance company hired a Philadelphia "super detective", Frank P. Geyer, to find him. He was brought to trial by Geyer for the murder of Benjamin Pitezel. Found guilty of murder, he was hung at the Moyamensing Prison gallows on May 7, 1896. Some have speculated the total number of his murders could be as high as 200 victims, yet he was convicted of one.
