Jim Carrey has been experiencing something of a career resurgence during the last few years. Starting around the time of his starring role on the short-lived Showtime series "Kidding," Carrey began to pop back up more regularly in mainstream entertainment. He played President Joe Biden in a slew of episodes in Season 46 of "Saturday Night Live," which flooded people's Facebook feeds. In 2018 he received his first Emmy Award nomination for outstanding documentary or non-fiction special for "Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond," which documented his process of portraying famed comedian Andy Kaufman in the 1999 film "Man on the Moon."

Most recently, he's played Dr. Robotnik in the "Sonic the Hedgehog" film series. The second film premiered on April 8, has received a pretty warm welcome from critics, and has earned a sizeable $200 million-plus pickup in ticket sales (via Box Office Mojo). 

With the recent news that Carrey is seriously considering retirement, there's no better time to check out a fan favorite from his storied career.

Nearly 20 years ago, Jim Carrey starred in "Bruce Almighty," the story of a news anchorman who is gifted the powers of God (played by Morgan Freeman) and begins to wreak havoc on Earth. Jennifer Aniston co-stars as Carrey's love interest Grace, and Steve Carell has a standout scene as a fellow news anchor who speaks gibberish.

"Bruce Almighty" came right after Carrey's hot streak during the '90s, where he appeared in everything from "Batman Forever" to "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "Dumb and Dumber" to "The Truman Show." It was also only a year before his universally acclaimed, heart-breaking performance in the mind-bending romance "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." While "Bruce Almighty" is middling in its critical reviews, it became Carrey's highest-grossing movie ever — and that record still stands (via The Numbers).
