User-submitted Reference

The name Hidalgo in the world.

The etymology of the name is very uncertain but it is quite logical to think that hidalgo being hijo de algo is an adapted translation of the Arabic ibn nas or the Hebrew ben adam or the biblical and evangelical scriptures 'son of man'.

The fact is that the name seems to spread from the moment when the Spanish language imposed itself against all others in Spain and therefore the appearance would have been made from the Arab conquest.

The expression 'son of man' goes back in all monotheistic religions to the biblical idea that every man is the son of Adam.

Adam meaning 'man made of the red clay of the earth'. It seems to me that behind the name Hidalgo could hide an ancestor of Jewish or Muslim origin from the moment when these two religions were banned in Spain in 1492.
