Origin of: Bean feast
Bean feast
Apparently, beans were much more sought after in olden days than they are today. Therefore, a bean feast was a special annual dinner given by employers for their workforce to whom beans would be served. This usage dates from the late 18th/early 19th century. In time, this was shortened to beano, which is first attested from the 1880s.
