COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — After meeting in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl, Ohio State and Notre Dame once again met in the desert in January 2016.

The No. 7 Buckeyes and No. 8 Fighting Irish met for the sixth time in the 2016 BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl.

Behind a high-powered offense and a stingy defense, Ohio State entered the game 11-1. It's lone loss of the season game in late November to Michigan State.

Notre Dame came into the game 10-2. The Fighting Irish had won six consecutive games before dropping its final contest of the regular season to No. 13 Stanford.

Ohio State got the Fiesta Bowl started with a dominating first quarter. The Buckeyes took an early 7-0 lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Ezekiel Elliott.

Just over two minutes later, Ohio State doubled its lead when J.T. Barrett connected with Michael Thomas for a 15-yard touchdown to give the Buckeyes a 14-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

With six minutes remaining in the first quarter, Ohio State defensive end and now NFL star Joey Bosa was ejected from the game for targeting Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer.

After Notre Dame got on the board with a 3-yard touchdown run by Josh Adams, Ohio State answered who two more scores.

Elliot scored a pair of 1-yard touchdowns capping off drives of 62 and 63 yards to give the Buckeyes a 285-7 lead with just under two minutes left in the first half.

Kizer punched in a 1-yard touchdown with just 29 seconds left in the half to cut the Buckeyes' lead to 28-14.

Coming out of the half, Notre Dame cut the Buckeyes' lead to one score when Kizer connected with Chris Brown for a 4-yard score.

Ohio State once again had an answer.

Midway through the third quarter, Elliot broke free for a 47-yard touchdown run - his fourth of the game - giving Ohio State a 35-21 lead.

Notre Dame added an 81-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, but three field goals by Buckeye kicker Sean Nuernberger gave Ohio State the 44-28 Fiesta Bowl victory.

Elliot rushed for 149 yards on 27 carries and scored four touchdowns for the Buckeyes.

The win gave the Ohio State seniors 50 for their careers.

The rematch in the desert gave Ohio State a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series with Notre Dame. It was also the last time the two schools squared off.

That will all change Saturday when No. 5 Notre Dame comes to Columbus to take on the No. 2 Buckeyes to kick off the 2022 season.
