Candy is a sweet treat that most children love almost anytime. From the tiny m&m's, the Hershey chocolate bar, to whipped and dreamy cotton candy or even the long twisted ropes of licorice. Nothing tastes quite like a SweeTart though. Learn some interesting facts and history about your favorite candy.
A SweeTart is a unique piece of candy that is so small yet filled with such big flavor that it makes your whole mouth happy. The candy offers little bit sweetness at first but then a lot of tartness. Kids of all ages love them. They are great stocking stuffers at Christmas and great little treats at Easter. There are different variations of the sweeTART, but there is nothing like the original candy that was first created many years ago. The history of the SweeTart starts back in the year 1952 when powdery flavored confections were created.
Back in 1952 a new candy business was created. The name of the company was Sunline Inc. The company produced some other well known popular sweet delights. The Pixi Stix, which are technically straws filled with a sweet sugary confection. The other sweet treat was Lik-m-Aid, which is three different flavors of powdery candy in little envelopes that comes with a white solid candy stick that is dipped in the powder and then licked off. However, parents were requesting candy that was not so messy. Therefore, in 1963 the SweeTART was introduced. The small round candies were created with the exact same flavors as the Pixi Stix. The flavors then were grape, lime, orange, lemon and cherry.
The name SweeTart was already in use by another company of the same name. The SweeTart company out of Dundee, Oregon, sold glazed and candied fruit. In 1964,the company tried unsuccessfully to sue the Sunline Company for using the name SweeTARTS on its product. The reason the Sunline Company won the suit was due to the fact that the original patent on SweeTARTs was no longer legitimate due to non-use.
Today, almost fifty years since the candies were first invented, children still love the sweet, tart little candies that are classic treats for people of all ages.
