Hogwarts Legacy Release Date Announced, Just Not For The Switch

Hogwarts Legacy, the upcoming action RPG based on the world of Harry Potter, has bagged a firm release date... Just not for the Switch.

If you're on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC, you'll be playing Hogwarts Legacy on February 10th, 2023. It seems, however, that developer Avalanche Software needs a bit more time with the Switch version to "deliver the best possible game experience", though this statement could potentially have applied to all versions of the game given it had a projected launch window of "Late 2022" until today.

So, the release date for Switch is up in the air for now, and it almost begs the question: will Hogwarts Legacy for the Switch be a Cloud Version? Hmm... Food for thought. [Update: As pointed out in the comments, a physical box release has been announced, but hey — stranger things have happened!]

Nevertheless, we're still looking forward to seeing how this one turns out, and delaying a game with a goal of improving upon its overall quality is a win in our minds.

While I understand it's a valid concern you guys, of all people, should know the physical version has been up for preorder on sites like amazon or gamestop for some time now, cloud versions for obvious reasons don't get listed at retailers. Wouldn't be surprised if the switch version gets delayed till summer 2023 and by that time I might as well just play it on pc.

I love my Switch to death. Have hundreds of games for it. I also got the Steam Deck recently. Let me tell you what: having a Steam Deck erases all the pain and anguish I get when I hear a Switch port “needs more time”.

I sorta want this game because it seems like it could be a cool concept gameplay wise but I have only recently become interested in JKRs works and I am still not really interested in Harry Potter as a brand. But it looks like it could be fun in a broader sense.

@Kr96 in pre-ordering a physical release, is an actual physical release cartridge guaranteed? I know that sounds like a stupid question, but there have been games that were "physical releases" that were really just a physical case and then a code for the game. Games that are pre ordered months in advance have been canceled entirely before, so what's to stop something from ultimately becoming a cloud version if they run into roadblocks with development

Hmmm, I would not be interested in a cloud version and the wording does not seem to indicate it will be. I do think it is a real sales misfire to ignore the switch’s 111 million user base at launch, but I’ll take a slight delay if it means it is not a cloud version.

I want to believe they spent the time to make a heavily downgraded version for Switch, but it doesn’t make sense. Cloud version would enable them to spend the least amount of resources for a Switch version.

Dragons don’t appear a lot in Harry Potter. They were most prominent used in the Goblet of Fire and Deathly Hallows. But that’s all I think.

It’s ok. The game was probably gonna look low-res and run like molasses on the Switch anyways. The Switch should not be your first console choice to play this on, unless you don’t have a choice.

Wasn’t there a physical version announced for switch, meaning it won’t be a cloud version. I’m not really into the Harry Potter franchise but I know this is a really big game for lots of people.

@anextphilosophy Ironically the fact it doesn't have a release date means it's still being worked on while a cloud version could perfectly release on the same date as on other consoles, I don't remember any instance where a cloud game wasn't revealed as such from the begining. Also it's important to note that this is a crossgen release (despite marketing making it seem like a ps5 exclusive) making the switch port more feasable with the respective compromises. This is such a huge title I don't see warner only selling codes in boxes, it's more likely the cartridge needing a partial download but hopefully not

Kind of strange how they mentioned the Nintendo Switch as a supported platform in general is coming out of the blue, several months after the game itself was first announced. There seems to be more to the behind-the-scenes than meets the eye.

It shouldn’t be surprising the Nintendo Switch version would be released at a later date, considering they already view Nintendo’s platform as an afterthought, and then there’s the fact this game looks ambitious to start with. A lot of us already thought the Nintendo Switch couldn’t handle it anyway.

@cammers1995 Well blame the Switch for being extremely under powered next to everything else. At this stage in its lifespan and with the likes of PS5 and Series starting to heavily take over you should be grateful the Switch is even getting a port of the game.

Not hugely interested in this game (I stopped caring about HP more than a decade ago), but if the Switch port is decent, I might pick it up for the novelty, like I did with The Witcher 3.

@cammers1995 If it was some indie or low-budget JRPG title I'd agree, but ambitious AAA third-party ports running natively on the Switch are a rarity to begin with. I'm still shocked they plan on porting it.

If you care about multiplatform AAA titles, best to pick up a power console. You can grab a Series S for the same price as a Switch and have access to a gigantic number of games that'll never hit this device.

It'll probably suck. Harry Potter's world basically falls apart because it's world was blatantly designed to only tell the story of Harry himself.

I don't see how this will be any less nonsense than the Fantastic Beasts or the Cursed Child.

I'm so sick of HP. I grew up with it from the very beginning with the original 3 novels. I watched every movie with my family at every Thanksgiving in the Theaters religiously and I'm so done. It's great for newer generations or insanely hardcore fans, but no thanks. I got burned out a decade ago. After Part 2's credits rolled I screamed in the theater, "THANK GOD IT'S OVER" While everyone cheered and clapped. Yes, it was a huge part of my childhood, and I read every book as they came out, but my God was it a series that got beat into the ground.

I always find it interesting that developers treat Switch versions as an afterthought or just create a downgraded version for the Switch. Switch has the highest install base of the consoles, I would think they would prioritize making games for it and then adapt those ones for the other platforms. Or maybe it's because they develop on PC and the more powerful consoles are closer to that architecture so it's easier to make their PC version and port them over. I'm also given to understand that third party games don't do all that well on Switch, either? I think I'm answering my own questions lol

@TheBigK I always feel like that is a self fulfilling mindset. If devs make it obvious that games are not prioritized on the switch then of course they will get passed over and then go “see we can’t sell on Nintendo “. I don’t see Capcom complaining about monster Hunter rise sales. I want a return to the gamecube days: if it can be made to run well on the system put it there day and date as everywhere else. Let me decide where I want to play.
